ഇന്ന് സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ കൈമാറുന്നത് വളരെ എളുപ്പമാണ്. ഒരു ഐപോഡുകൊണ്ടോ ഇ-മെയിൽ കൊണ്ടോ ടെലഫോൺ കൊണ്ടോ എന്തിന് ഒരു പുഞ്ചിരികൊണ്ടും നമുക്കത് സാധ്യമാണ്. എന്നാൽ ഇന്നത്തേപ്പോലെ അത്ര എളുപ്പമായിരുന്നില്ല ഇന്നലെകൾ. രാജാവിന്റെ സന്ദേശവാഹകരായ ഭൂതൻമാരും അഞ്ചലോട്ടക്കാരും പെരുമ്പറ മുഴക്കുന്നവരുമെല്ലാം സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ കൈമാറിയ കാലം വെറും നൂറുവർഷങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിൽ സംഭവിച്ചതാണ്. എന്നാൽ ഇന്ന് ഇങ്ങനെയല്ല കാര്യങ്ങൾ. ഭൂമിക്കപ്പുറമുള്ള ഗ്രഹങ്ങളിലേക്കും നക്ഷത്രാന്തര ലോകത്തേക്കും സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ അയയ്ക്കാനും അവിടെനിന്നുവരുന്ന സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ സ്വീകരിക്കാനും നമുക്ക് കഴിയും. വാർത്താവിനിമയമേഖലയിൽ ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൊണ്ടുണ്ടായ പുരോഗതി മറ്റേതൊരു ശാസ്ത്രസാങ്കേതിക മേഖലയിലുമുണ്ടായ വളർച്ചയെ അതിശയിപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണ്.

സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ കൈമാറുന്നതിന് വിവിധ രീതികളുണ്ട്. സംസാരത്തിലൂടെ, പാട്ടിലൂടെ, കൂക്കുവിളിയിലൂടെ കൈകൊട്ടലിലുടെ, ആംഗ്യത്തിലൂടെയെല്ലാം സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ കൈമാറാൻ കഴിയും. മൃഗങ്ങളും പക്ഷികളും സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ കൈമാറുന്നുണ്ട്. എന്നാൽ അവർക്ക് മനുഷ്യരെപ്പോലെ ഭാഷ ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല. കാരണം മനുഷ്യമസ്തിഷ്‌ക്കത്തിന്റെ വികസനം മറ്റു ജന്തുമസ്തിഷ്‌ക്കങ്ങൾക്കുണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല. മനുഷ്യരേപ്പോലെ ശരീരഭാഷ കൊണ്ട് മറ്റു ജന്തുക്കൾക്കും സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ കൈമാറാൻ കഴിയും. ഗതാഗതനിയന്ത്രണത്തിന് ശരീരഭാഷയും വെളിച്ചവും സന്ദേശവിനിമയത്തിന് മനുഷ്യർ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണ് മറ്റു ജന്തുക്കൾക്ക് സംസാരിക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്തത്. മനുഷ്യരെപ്പോലെ അവയ്ക്കും ശ്വാസകോശങ്ങളും പല്ലും നാവും വായും സ്വനപേടകവുമെല്ലാമുണ്ടല്ലോ. എന്നാൽ ഇവയുടെ ഘടന മനുഷ്യരിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. ശ്വാസനിയന്ത്രണവും ഇതിൽ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള കാര്യമാണ് ലാറിങ്‌സിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോകുന്ന വായു ശ്വാസകോശത്തിലേക്കുള്ള സഞ്ചാര പാതയിൽ ലാറിങ്‌സിലെ മസിലുകളെ (Vocal chords) ഉത്തേജിപ്പിക്കുകയും അതിന്റെ ഫലമായി ഇലാസ്തിക സ്വഭാവമുള്ള വോക്കൽ കോർജുകളുടെ കമ്പനം ശബ്ദമാവുകയും പല്ല്, നാവ്, മോണ, ചുണ്ട് എന്നിവ കൊണ്ട് നിയന്ത്രിക്കാൻ കഴിയുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോഴാണ് ഭാഷയുണ്ടാകുന്നത്.

ഹോമോസാപിയൻസിനു മാത്രമേ ഇത് സാധ്യമായിട്ടുള്ളൂ.
നിയാണ്ടർതാൽ മനുഷ്യന് ഭാഷ ഇല്ലാതിരുന്നതാണ് ശാരീരികമായി ദൂർബലരായ സാപിയൻസ് അവരെ അതിജീവിക്കുന്നതിനും നിയാണ്ടർതാലൻസിന്റെ വംശനാശത്തിനും കാരണമായത്. ജനിതക ഘടനയിൽ സാപിയൻസിന്റെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുവായ ചിമ്പൻസിയ്ക്ക് സംസാരിക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ലെങ്കിലും മനുഷ്യൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ശരീരഭാഷയിലൂടെ സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ കൈമാറാൻ കഴിയും. മനുഷ്യന്റെ ശബ്ദത്തിനനുസരിച്ച് പ്രതികരിക്കുന്നതിനും ചിമ്പാൻസികൾക്ക് കഴിയും. മാത്രവുമല്ല ജന്തുക്കൾ അവയുടെ സ്വന്തം സ്പീഷീസുകളുമായി ആശയവിനിമയം നടത്തുന്നുമുണ്ട്. തൊട്ടടുത്തുള്ളതും സ്വന്തം വർഗത്തിലുള്ളവരോടും മാത്രമേ അവർക്ക് അതിനു കഴിയു. തിമിംഗലത്തിന് നൂറുകണക്കിന് കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്തേക്ക് സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ അയക്കാൻ കഴിയും. എന്നാൽ ഒരു നീലത്തിമിംഗലം അയയ്ക്കുന്ന സന്ദേശം മറ്റൊരു സ്പീഷീസിലുള്ള തിമിംഗലത്തിന് മനസിലാക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല. ഒരു പൂച്ചയുടെ സന്ദേശം കടുവയ്ക്കും സിംഹത്തിനും പുലിയ്ക്കും മനസിലാക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല. ശരീരഭാഷയിലൂടെ സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ കൈമാറാൻ മനുഷ്യർക്കെന്ന പോലെ മറ്റ് ജന്തുക്കൾക്കും കഴിയും. അത് മനസിലാക്കാനും വ്യത്യസ്ത സ്പീഷീസിലുള്ള ജന്തുക്കൾക്കും കഴിയും. പൂച്ചയുടെയും പുലിയുടെയും നായയുടെയുമെല്ലാം ശരീരഭാഷ തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ മനുഷ്യനും കഴിയുന്നുണ്ട്.

മനുഷ്യർ ചില ശരീരഭാഷകൾ പ്രദേശികമായല്ലാതെ ലോകത്തെവിടെയും ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്ന രീതിയിലേക്ക് പരിവർത്തിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുമുണ്ട്. ഇവയിൽ കൂടുതലും കൈകൾ കൊണ്ടുള്ള ആംഗ്യങ്ങളാണ്. എന്നാൽ ചില ആംഗ്യങ്ങൾ പ്രാദേശികമായി വ്യത്യസ്തവുമാണ്. ഉദാഹരമായി തള്ളവിരലും ചൂണ്ടുവിരലും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പൂജ്യം കാണിച്ചാൽ അമേരിക്കക്കാർ അതിനെ‘ഓക്കെ’എന്ന് വായിക്കും. എന്നാൽ ലോകത്തിൽ മറ്റുപല സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും അത് മറ്റുള്ളവരെ പരിഹസിക്കുന്നതായി ആണ് വായിക്കുക. എന്നാൽ മനുഷ്യർക്കല്ലാതെ മറ്റു ജന്തുക്കൾക്ക് ശരീരഭാഷയെയും ആംഗ്യങ്ങളെയും വ്യത്യസ്തമായി വ്യാഖ്യാനിക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല.
എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണ് മറ്റു ജന്തുകളിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി മനുഷ്യർ വിവിധ ഭാഷകൾ സംസാരിക്കുന്നത്? ശിലായുഗത്തിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന മനുഷ്യർക്ക് തീയെക്കുറിച്ചും അതിന്റെ ഉപയോഗത്തേക്കുറിച്ചും അത് കെട്ടുപോകാതെ സൂക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടതിനെക്കുറിച്ചും മാത്രമേ സംസാരിക്കാനുണ്ടാകൂ.

എന്നാൽ മനുഷ്യൻ ഭൂമിയിൽ വ്യത്യസ്ത പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലേക്ക് മാറിയതും ആവശ്യങ്ങൾ ഏറിയതും മസ്തിഷ്‌ക്കത്തിന്റെ വളർച്ചയുമാണ് വ്യത്യസ്ത ഭാഷകൾ രൂപപ്പെടാൻ കാരണമായത്. ഒരു യൂണിവേഴ്‌സൽ ലാംഗ്വേജ് എന്ന രീതിയിൽനിന്നും പ്രാദേശിക ഭാഷകൾ രൂപംകൊള്ളുന്നതും ഇക്കാലത്താണ്. ഇന്ന് ആറായിരത്തിലധികം വ്യത്യസ്ത ഭാഷകളിലൂടെയാണ് മനുഷ്യർ പരസ്പരം ആശയവിനിമയം നടത്തുന്നത്.

ശരീരഭാഷകൾക്ക് പുറമെയാണിത്. ജനസംഖ്യയും അധിനിവേശവും പ്രാദേശിക ഭാഷകളെ വ്യാപകമാക്കുന്നതിനും കാരണമായി. ചൈനീസ് ഭാഷയാണ് ഇന്ന് ലോകത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവുമധികം ആളുകൾ സംസാരിക്കുന്നത്. സ്പാനിഷും ഇംഗ്ലീഷും റഷ്യനും ഹിന്ദിയും തൊട്ടുപിന്നിലുണ്ട്. നോർവേ, ജർമനി പോലെയുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ ഒരു ഭാഷമാത്രം ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഇന്ത്യപോലെയുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ
പ്രാദേശികമായി വ്യത്യസ്ത ഭാഷകളാണ് ആശയവിനിമയത്തിനായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. മാത്രവുമല്ല ഭാഷാപഠനം വളരെ സങ്കീർണവും വിഷമകരവുമായ ഒരു പ്രക്രിയയാണ്. എഴുത്തുഭാഷ പഠിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ അത്ര എളുപ്പമല്ല സംസാര ഭാഷ. എഴുത്തു ഭാഷ എന്നുപറയുന്നതിൽ തന്നെ വലിയ അർഥമൊന്നുമില്ല. ഭാഷയ്ക്ക് ജീവനുണ്ടാകുന്നത് സംസാരിക്കുമ്പോഴാണല്ലോ. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപുതന്നെ സാപിയൻസ് സംസാരിക്കാൻ ആരംഭിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഏതുകാലഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് ഏത് ജനസമൂഹമാണ് ലിഖിതഭാഷ ആരംഭിച്ചതെന്ന് കൃത്യമായി പറയാൻ കഴിയില്ല. കച്ചവടം ആരംഭിച്ച കാലത്തായിരിക്കും ലിഖിതഭാഷ രൂപപ്പെട്ടതെന്ന് കരുതുന്നു. ആദ്യകാലത്ത് ലിഖിതഭാഷ ചിത്രരൂപത്തിലായിരുന്നു. സൂമേറിയക്കാരും ഈജീപ്ഷ്യൻസുമായിരുന്നു ലിഖിതഭാഷ ആദ്യമായി പ്രചാരത്തിലെത്തിച്ചത്. ഇത്തരം ചിത്രലിഖിതങ്ങളാണ് പിന്നീട് അക്ഷരമാലയുടെ ഉദ്ഭവത്തിന് കാരണമായത്. ശബ്ദമുള്ളതും പൊതുവായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതുമായ ഒരു കൂട്ടം അക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെ സമാഹാരമാണ് അക്ഷരമാല. വ്യഞ്ജനാക്ഷരങ്ങൾ മാത്രമുള്ളതായിരുന്നു ആദ്യത്തെ അക്ഷരമാല.

ഗ്രീക്കുകാരാണ് അക്ഷരമാലയ്ക്ക് സ്വരാക്ഷരങ്ങൾ സമ്മാനിച്ചത്. ആൽഫബറ്റ് എന്ന പേരും ഗ്രീക്ക് ഭാഷയിലെ ആൽഫാ, ബിറ്റാ എന്നീവാക്കുകളിൽ നിന്നാണുണ്ടായത്. 5000 വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപാണ് ആദ്യത്തെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ രൂപംകൊണ്ടത്. കളിമൺ ഫലകങ്ങളും മൃഗത്തോലുകളുമായിരുന്നു ആദ്യപുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എഴുതാനുപയോഗിച്ച മാധ്യമങ്ങൾ. പിന്നീട് മരത്തോലുകളും പാപ്പിറസുകളും പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ മാധ്യമങ്ങളായി. എഴുത്താണിയും കരിമഷിയുമെല്ലാം ചേർന്ന് വരച്ച അക്ഷരങ്ങൾക്ക് പുതിയ രൂപവും ഭാവവും ലഭിച്ചത് അച്ചടിയന്ത്രത്തിന്റെ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തത്തോടുകൂടിയാണ്. യൂറോപ്യനായ യൊഹാൻ ഗുട്ടൻബെർഗ് ആണ് അച്ചടിയന്ത്രം കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചത്. ബി.സി. 1400 ൽ ചൈനക്കാർ അച്ചടിയന്ത്രത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ആദ്യപതിപ്പ് നിർമിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ചൈനീസ് ചിത്രലിപി അച്ചടിക്കാൻ അത് പര്യാപ്തമായിരുന്നില്ല. വിസ്മൃതിയിലായിപ്പോയ ആദ്യ അച്ചടിയന്ത്രത്തിനുശേഷം എ.ഡി. 1450 ൽ ഗുട്ടൻബെർഗ് നിർമിച്ച അച്ചടിയന്ത്രത്തോടുകൂടിയാണ് ലിഖിതഭാഷയുടെ ആധുനിക രൂപം കൈവന്നത്. 1452 ൽ ഗുട്ടൻബെർഗ് അച്ചടിയന്ത്രത്തിൽ ബൈബിൾ പ്രിന്റ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ആദ്യമായി അച്ചടിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഗ്രന്ഥം എന്ന ബഹുമതിയും ബൈബിളിന് ലഭിച്ചു കല്ലുകളും ലോഹങ്ങളും അക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെ അച്ചടിക്ക് തുടക്കം കുറിച്ച കല്ലച്ചുകളും ലോഹ അച്ചുകൂടങ്ങളും ഇന്ന് കംപ്യൂട്ടറുകൾക്ക് വഴിമാറി. പണ്ട് അച്ചടിച്ച അക്ഷരങ്ങൾക്കും ചിത്രങ്ങൾക്കും പിന്നീട് നിറം ചേർക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് കംപ്യൂട്ടറിൽ തയ്യാറാക്കിയ പ്രൂഫുകൾ നേരിട്ട് പ്രിന്ററിലെത്തിക്കുകയാണ്. നിറങ്ങളും അക്ഷരങ്ങളും ചിത്രങ്ങളും ഒരുമിച്ച് പ്രിന്റ് ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയും. ചുരുങ്ങിയ സമയത്തിനുള്ളിൽ കൂടുതൽ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ലിഖിതരൂപത്തിലാക്കാൻ അച്ചടിയന്ത്രത്തിന് അത് കംപ്യൂട്ടറുകളുടെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ കഴിയുന്നു എന്നതാണ് അച്ചടിയന്ത്രങ്ങളുടെ പ്രസക്തി വർധിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.

ലിഖിത ഭാഷ ആദ്യമായും ഏറ്റവും ഫലപ്രദമായും ഉപയോഗിച്ചത് സൈനികരായിരുന്നു. യുദ്ധ മുന്നണിയിലേക്കും തിരിച്ച് രാജകൊട്ടാരത്തിലേക്കും ദൂതൻമാർ നിരന്തരം സന്ദേശങ്ങളുമായി സഞ്ചരിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇതാണ് തപാൽ സംവിധാനത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കം. ഓരോ പത്ത് കിലോമീറ്ററിനുള്ളിലും സന്ദേശവാഹകർക്കും കുതിരകൾക്കും വിശ്രമിക്കാനു ള്ള കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളും ഒരുക്കിയിരുന്നു പുരാതന ഈജിപ്തിൽ ഇത്തരം സന്ദേശവിതരണ സംവിധാനം 5000 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപുതന്നെ ആരംഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. റോമൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ തകർച്ചയ്ക്കു ശേഷം ഇത്തരം സന്ദേശ വാഹക-വിതരണ സമ്പ്രദായവും വിസ്മൃതിയിലായിത്തീർന്നു. പിന്നീട് മധ്യകാലഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് ഇത്തരം സന്ദേശവാഹക സമ്പ്രദായം പുനരാരംഭിച്ചത്. പോസ്റ്റിയ എന്ന ലത്തീൻ വാക്കിൽനിന്നാണ് പോസ്റ്റ് ഉണ്ടായത്. നിശ്ചയിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് എന്നാണീ വാക്കിന്റെ അർഥം. ജൂലിയസ് സീസറിന്റെ ഭരണകാലത്ത് റോമാ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ സന്ദേശവാഹകർ മുൻകൂട്ടിനിശ്ചയിക്കപ്പെട്ട പോസ്റ്റ് സ്റ്റേഷനുകളിൽ സന്ദേശങ്ങൾ എത്തിക്കാനാരംഭിച്ചു. ജൂലിയസിന്റെ മരണശേഷം അധികാരത്തിലെത്തിയ അഗസ്റ്റസ് സീസർ ഈ പോസ്റ്റേജ് സംവിധാനം കൂറേക്കൂടി വിപുലമാക്കി. സന്ദേശങ്ങൾക്കു പുറമെ പണവും നിർമാണ ഉപകരണങ്ങളും മൃഗങ്ങളും വരെ പോസ്റ്റേജ് വഴി കൈമാറ്റം ചെയ്യാൻ അഗസ്റ്റസിന്റെ കാലത്ത് കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഈ സൗകര്യങ്ങൾ ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നത് പ്രഭുക്കൾക്കും മറ്റ് ഉന്നതകുലജാതർക്കും മാത്രമായിരുന്നു.

ഒളിംപിക്‌സിലെ മാരത്തോൺ ഓട്ടത്തിനും ഒരു സന്ദേശ വാഹകന്റെ ചരിത്രം പറയാനുണ്ട്. ബി.സി. 490 ൽ പേർഷ്യൻ യുദ്ധക്കപ്പലുകൾ ഗ്രീക്ക് തീര നഗരമായ മാരത്തോൺ ആക്രമിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ അഥീനയുടെ പോരാളികൾ പേർഷ്യക്കാരെ തോൽപിച്ചു. ഈ സന്തോഷവാർത്ത രാജകൊട്ടാരത്തിലെത്തിക്കാൻ ഫിഡിപ്പെഡസ് എന്ന ഭടൻ നിയോഗിതനായി. കുന്നുകളും മലകളും കടന്ന് 40 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരെയുള്ള കൊട്ടാരത്തിലെത്താൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് തന്റെ കുതിരയെ ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നില്ല. മാരത്തോണിൽ നിന്ന് കൊട്ടാരം വരെ ഓടിയെത്തിയ ഭടൻ ഈ സന്തോഷവാർത്ത രാജാവിനെ അറിയിച്ചതും കുഴഞ്ഞുവീണ് മരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഈ ഓർമയിലാണ് 1896 മുതൽ ഒളിംപിക്‌സിനും 40 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൈർഘ്യമുള്ള മാരത്തോൺ ഓട്ടം ആരംഭിച്ചതെന്നാണ് പറയുന്നത്.
