അതുകൊണ്ടായിരിക്കണം ഏക മകനായ അവൻ ജനിക്കാൻ താമസിച്ചത്… വർഷങ്ങളുടെ ഇടവേളകളിൽ വരുന്ന വാപ്പാനെ ആദ്യമൊക്കെ അകലെ നിന്നു നോക്കി കാണുമായിരുന്നു…. പരിചയമായി വരുമ്പോഴേക്കും വീണ്ടും ഏതോ ലോകത്തേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു പോകും … അവൻ വലുതാകും തോറും ഇടക്ക് സമ്മാനങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടു വന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു അജ്ഞാതനായിരുന്നു അയാൾ .
ബുന്ധിയുറച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോഴാണ് അത് സ്വന്തം വാപ്പയാണെന്നറിയുന്നത് …. അതുവരെ അയാളവന് സമ്മാനങ്ങൾ തരാൻ മാത്രം വരുന്ന ഒരു വഴി യാത്രക്കാരനായിരുന്നു.
പ്രായമായി നരച്ച മുടികളിൽ വിരലോടിച്ചു ഉമ്മയുടെ ചീത്തയെ അവഗണിച്ചു പുഞ്ചിരിച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്ന വാപ്പ ഒരു അത്ഭുതമായിരുന്നു… കാരണം

ഒരു ദിവസം അവൻ ഉമ്മയോട് ചോദിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്തിനാണ് വാപ്പയെ ചീത്ത പറയുന്നെതെന്നു… അതിനുള്ള മറുപടി ഒരു തുറിച്ചു നോട്ടമായിരുന്നു.
എന്നും രാവിലെ പറമ്പിൽ വാഴക്ക് വെള്ളമൊഴിച്ചും വളമിട്ടും രാത്രിവരെ കഴിച്ചു കൂട്ടുന്ന വാപ്പനോടും ഒരു ദിവസം അവൻ ചോദിച്ചു. എന്തിനാണ്

അതിനുള്ള മറുപടി ഒരു ചിരിയായിരുന്നു…എന്നിട്ട് പറഞ്ഞു.

അകലെ നിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു ആൽമരം ചൂണ്ടികാണിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വാപ്പ ചോദിച്ചു…
വാപ്പ സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങുമ്പോൾ ആൽമരം അവിടെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
അതിൽ നിറയെ ഇലകളും.എന്റെ കുട്ടികാലത്തു ഞങ്ങൾ വൈകുന്നേരങ്ങളിൽ അതിന്റെ ചുവട്ടിൽ പോയി ഇരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു.
പക്ഷെ ഇപ്പോൾ അതു ഉണങ്ങി ഒരു പാഴ്മരമായി മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു.
വാപ്പ തുടർന്നു .”പണ്ട് ആ മരത്തിൽ നിറയെ ചില്ലകളും ഇലകളും നിറഞ്ഞു നിന്നിരുന്നു. അപ്പോഴത് നമുക്ക് തണൽ നൽകുമായിരുന്നു.ഇന്നു അതിൽ ചില്ലകളോ ഇലകളോ ഇല്ല. ഒരു ഉണങ്ങിയ ഒരു വൃക്ഷം മാത്രം.വിൽക്കാൻ നോക്കിയാലും ആരും വാങ്ങില്ല… വേണമെങ്കിൽ മുറിച്ചു കളയാം. അത്രമാത്രം “
അതു പറയുമ്പോൾ വാപ്പയുടെ കണ്ണുകൾ നിറയുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ആ വാക്കുകളിൽ അവനത് മനസ്സിലായിരുന്നു. അതേ ചില പ്രവാസികൾ ഇന്നും വീട്ടുകാർക്ക് ഉണങ്ങിയ വൃക്ഷം പോലെയാണ്.
തളിർത്തു നിൽക്കുമ്പോൾ തണൽ പറ്റി നിൽക്കാൻ ഒരുപാട് പേരുണ്ടാകും. ഇലകൾ കൊഴിഞ്ഞാൽ വെള്ളമൊഴിക്കാൻ പോലും ഒരാളുണ്ടാകില്ല.
