കടൽ കൊള്ളക്ക് കടല്‍ വ്യാപാരത്തോളം തന്നെ പഴക്കമുണ്ട്. മലബാര്‍ തീരത്ത് പുരാതന കാലം മുതല്‍ തന്നെ കൊള്ളക്കാര്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പുരാതനകാലത്തെ സഞ്ചാരികളായ പെരിപ്ലസ് ഓഫ് ദി എറിത്രിയൻ സീയുടെ (periplus of the erythriyan sea) യുടെ അജ്ഞാതനായ കർത്താവ് മുതൽ പ്ലിനിയും, ടോളമിയും, മാര്‍ക്കോ പോളോയുമടക്കം പതിനെട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ട് വരെ മലബാര്‍ സന്ദർശിച്ച ഏതാണ്ട് എല്ലാവരും തന്നെ മലബാർ തീരത്തെ കപ്പല്‍ കൊള്ളക്കാരെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. മുസിരിസിനടുത്തുള്ള ഹൈഡ്രേ (Hydrae) എന്ന സ്ഥലം കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ കേന്ദ്രമായി പ്ലിനി പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. കുടുംബമായി കടലിൽ സഞ്ചരിച്ച്‌ കൊള്ളനടത്തുന്ന കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരെയും അവരുടെ രീതികളെയും കുറിച്ച് മാർക്കോപോളോ ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നു.
“ ഇവിടെനിന്നും വളരെ അകലെയല്ലാത്ത ഗുജറാത്ത് രാജ്യത്തിലെപ്പോലെതന്നെ ഇവിടെ ധാരാളം കടൽകൊള്ളക്കാരുണ്ട്. അവർ നൂറോളം ചെറു നൗകകളിലായി വർഷം മുഴുവൻ ഈ കടൽ അരിച്ചുപെറുക്കി ഈ വഴി കടന്നുപോകുന്ന എല്ലാ വ്യാപാര കപ്പലുകളും പിടികൂടി കൊള്ളയടിക്കും. ഇവർ അവരുടെ ഭാര്യമാരെയും കുട്ടികളെയും കടലിൽ കൂടെക്കൂട്ടും. കപ്പലുകളൊന്നും രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു പോകാതിരിക്കാൻ ഇവരുടെ നൗകകൾ അഞ്ചു മൈൽ ഇടവിട്ട് നങ്കൂരമിടും. ഇരുപതു നൗകകൾ നൂറു മൈൽ കയ്യടക്കും. വ്യാപാരിയുടെ കപ്പൽ വരുന്നുകണ്ടാൽ തീയോ, പുകയോ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് അടയാളം നൽകും. എല്ലാവരും കൂടി വളഞ്ഞ് കപ്പൽ കീഴടക്കും. കപ്പലിലെ ആളുകളെ ഉപദ്രവിക്കാറില്ല.പക്ഷെ കപ്പൽ കീഴടക്കിയാൽ അവരെ വീണ്ടും ചരക്കുമായി വരാൻ ഉപദേശിച്ച് കരക്കിറക്കി വിടും. എങ്കിൽ വീണ്ടും കൊള്ളയടിക്കാമല്ലോ”. ഗുജറാത്തിലെ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാർ കപ്പലിലെ ആളുകളെ ഉപ്പുവെള്ളം കുടിപ്പിക്കും എന്ന വിവരവും മാർക്കോ പോളോ നൽകുന്നുണ്ട്. അവർ വിഴുങ്ങിയ രത്നങ്ങളും മറ്റും ഛർദ്ദിപ്പിക്കാനാണത്രെ അത്.
പോർട്ടുഗീസ് സഞ്ചാരിയായ ഡ്യൂററ്റ് ബാർബോസ പുറക്കാട്ട് കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച് കൊള്ള നടത്തുന്ന ആളുകളെക്കുറിച്ച് 1516 ൽ എഴുതുന്നുണ്ട്.
“പുറക്കാടിന് സ്വന്തമായി രാജാവുണ്ട്. ഇവിടെ ഒരു പണിയുമില്ലാത്ത വിജാതീയരായ ധാരാളം മീൻപിടുത്തക്കാരുണ്ട്. ശൈത്യ കാലത്ത് മീൻ പിടിക്കുകയും, വേനൽക്കാലത്ത് കടലിൽ കിട്ടുന്നവരെ കൊള്ളയടിക്കുകയുമല്ലാതെ വേറെ പണിയൊന്നും അവർ ചെയ്യാറില്ല. അവർക്ക് ബ്രിഗാന്റിൻ (brigantine) പോലെയുള്ള ഒരുതരം ചെറിയ വള്ളങ്ങളുണ്ട്. അത് വളരെ വിദഗ്ദ്ധമായി തുഴയാനുമറിയാം. ഇത്തരം അനേകം വള്ളങ്ങളിൽ അമ്പും വില്ലും ധരിച്ച് കടലിൽ കുടുങ്ങിയ ഏത് കപ്പലും വളഞ്ഞ് അവ കീഴടക്കും. കപ്പലും അതിലെ ആളുകളെയും കൊള്ളയടിച്ച് ആളുകളെ കരക്കിറക്കി വിടും. കൊള്ളമുതലുകൾ രാജ്യത്തെ രാജാവുമായി പങ്കിടും. രാജാവും ഇതിൽ പങ്കാളിയാണ്. ഇത്തരം വള്ളങ്ങളെ അവർ “ചതുരി” എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്.”
കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാർ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ചതുരി എന്ന വള്ളത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് കൂടുതൽ വിശദമായി ബാർബോസ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഒറ്റത്തടിയിൽ പന്ത്രണ്ടോ, പതിമൂന്നോ ചുവട് നീളത്തിലുള്ള ഒരുതരം തോണിയാണ് ചതുരി. വീതി വളരെ കുറഞ്ഞ ഈ തോണികളിൽ ഒരാൾക്ക് പുറകിൽ വേറൊരാൾ എന്ന രീതിയിലേ ഇരിക്കാനാകൂ. തോണിയുടെ രണ്ടറ്റവും കൂർത്തിരിക്കും. തുഴകളോ, പായയോ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് മുന്നോട്ടു കുതിക്കുന്ന ഈ വള്ളം ഏതൊരു പടക്കപ്പലിനേക്കാൾ, ഫ്യൂസ്‌റ്റയെക്കാൾ, ബ്രിഗാന്റിനേക്കാൾ വേഗതയുള്ളതാണ്.
ചതുരി ഉപയോഗിച്ച് മലബാർ തീരത്ത് കൊള്ള നടത്തുന്ന സംഘങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ലുഡോവിക്കോ ഡി വാർത്തെമ്മയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ യാത്രാവിവരണത്തിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാരുടെ വരവോടെ യൂറോപ്പിലേക്കുള്ള വ്യാപാരം കൂടിയതോടെ എളുപ്പം പണക്കാരാകാനുള്ള മാർഗ്ഗം എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഈ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ കൊള്ളയും ശക്തിപ്പെട്ടു. സ്വാഭാവികമായും കൊള്ളക്ക് വിധേയരാകുന്നത് കൂടുതലും പോർട്ടുഗീസ് കപ്പലുകളും.
കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ കുഞ്ഞാലി മരക്കാന്മാർ സാമൂതിരിയുടെ നാവികസേനയുടെ തലവന്മാരായിരുന്നു എന്നാണല്ലോ പൊതുവേ പറയപ്പെടുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ അതിൽ എത്രത്തോളം വാസ്തവമുണ്ട് എന്നതിൽ സംശയമുണ്ട്. സർദാർ കെ.എം പണിക്കർ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ അങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നതല്ലാതെ ഈ നാവിക സേനാമേധാവി എന്ന പദവിയുടെ വേറെ തെളിവൊന്നും കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. സാമൂതിരിയുടെ നാവികസേനാ മേധാവികൾക്ക് കുഞ്ഞാലിമാർ ഒന്നു മുതൽ നാലു വരെ എന്ന് നമ്പറിട്ടതും സർദാർ കെ.എം. പണിക്കരാണ്.
ഷെയ്ഖ് സൈനുദ്ധീന്റെ തുഹ്ഫത്തുൽ മുജാഹിദീൻ സാമൂതിരിയും പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാരും തമ്മിലുള്ള യുദ്ധം വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും, ആ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ മരക്കാന്മാരെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പരാമർശങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും, സാമൂതിരിയുടെ കീഴിലുള്ള സേനയാണ് മരക്കാന്മാരുടേത് എന്നതിന്റെ ഒരു സൂചനയുമില്ല.
കുട്ടിപോക്കർ എന്ന കുഞ്ഞാലി രണ്ടാമൻ കായൽപട്ടണത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുത്ത ഒരു ആക്രമണത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ഷെയ്ഖ് സൈനുദ്ധീൻ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. അതുപോലെ മംഗലാപുരത്ത് പോർട്ടുഗീസ് കോട്ട ആക്രമിക്കുന്നതിനിടയിൽ പരിക്കേറ്റാണ് 1569 ൽ കുട്ടിപ്പോക്കർ മരിക്കുന്നതെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
അക്രമ സംഘത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രമുഖൻ എന്നല്ലാതെ കുട്ടിപ്പോക്കർ ഏതെങ്കിലും ഔദ്യോഗിക സ്ഥാനത്തിരുന്നാണ് ഈ ആക്രമണങ്ങളിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നത് എന്ന സൂചനയൊന്നും ഷെയ്ഖ് സൈനുദ്ധീൻ നൽകുന്നില്ല. മംഗലാപുരത്തും, തൂത്തുക്കുടിയിലും വരെ പോയി ആക്രമണങ്ങൾ നടത്തുന്നത് സാമൂതിരിയുടെ ഔദ്യോഗിക നാവികസേനയുടെ പണിയാണോ ?
ഒരു പക്ഷേ സാമൂതിരി ആദ്യത്തെ കുഞ്ഞാലിയെ മാത്രം നാവികതലവനാക്കിയിരുന്നു എന്നു വരാം. അദ്ദേഹം 1539 ൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1540 ലെ പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാരുമായുള്ള സന്ധിയിൽ അഞ്ചു തുഴകളിൽ കൂടുതലുള്ള വള്ളങ്ങൾ സാമൂതിരിക്ക് പാടില്ല എന്ന വ്യവസ്ഥയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ നാവികസേന തന്നെ ഇല്ലാതായിപ്പോയ സാമൂതിരിക്ക് പിന്നെന്ത് സേനാമേധാവി?
ബാക്കിയുള്ള കുഞ്ഞാലി മരക്കാന്മാർ സാമൂതിരിയുടെ നാവികത്തലവൻ എന്നതിനേക്കാൾ Privateers ആയിരുന്നിരിക്കാനാണ് കൂടുതൽ സാധ്യത. അതായത് കമ്മീഷൻ വ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ കപ്പലുകൾ പിടിച്ചെടുക്കുന്ന സ്വകാര്യസേന അഥവാ കൂലിപ്പട്ടാളം. ഇതും piracy എന്ന കടൽക്കൊള്ളയും തമ്മിൽ ചെറിയ വ്യതാസമേ ഉള്ളൂ. Privateers ന് ജോലിക്കനുസരിച്ചാണ് കൂലി. കപ്പലുകൾ കൊള്ളയടിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിൽ വരുമാനവുമില്ല, കൂലിയുമില്ല. കൂടുതൽ കൊള്ളയടിച്ചാൽ കൂടുതൽ വരുമാനം. കൂടുതൽ കൂലി. കൊള്ളമുതലിന്റെ നിശ്ചിത ഭാഗം രാജാവിന് നൽകണം. രാജാവിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക സേനയിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി ഇവർക്ക് രാജാവ് വേറെ ശമ്പളമൊന്നും കൊടുക്കുന്നില്ല. കൊള്ളമുതലിൽ നിന്നു വേണം ചെലവ് കഴിയാൻ. അതായത് രാജാവിന്റെ അറിവോടും, സമ്മതത്തോടും കൂടി രാജാവ് നിർദ്ദേശിക്കുന്ന കപ്പലുകൾ കൊള്ളയടിക്കുന്നവരാണ് Privateers. എല്ലാവരുടെയും, രാജാവിന്റെ കപ്പലുകൾ അടക്കം കൊള്ളയടിക്കുന്നവരാണ് Pirates എന്ന കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാർ.
സാധാരണ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരും ഈ Privateers ഉം തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസം ആദ്യത്തെ കൂട്ടർ പൂർണ്ണമായും സ്വതന്ത്രരും, രണ്ടാമത്തെ കൂട്ടർ അവരുടെ കൊള്ളമുതൽ സ്ഥലത്തെ രാജാവുമായി പങ്കിടുന്നു എന്നതുമാണ്.
സാമൂതിരി തന്നെ കുഞ്ഞാലിയും കൂട്ടരും കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരാണ് എന്ന് സമ്മതിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. 1564 ൽ നടന്ന ഒരു ആക്രമണത്തിൽ പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാർ ഈ കൊള്ളക്കാരെ തോൽപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. സാമൂതിരിയുടെ അനുവാദത്തോടെയാണ് ഈ കടൽ കൊള്ളകൾ നടക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് പോർട്ടുഗീസ് വൈസ്രോയി സാമൂതിരിയോട് പരാതിപ്പെട്ടു. “അതെ, അവർ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരാണ്. അവരുടെ കൈയ്യിൽ പെടുന്ന ആരെയും ശിക്ഷിക്കാനുള്ള അധികാരം അവർക്കുണ്ട്” എന്നാണ് സാമൂതിരി മറുപടി കൊടുത്തത്. (ഇതുകേട്ട് അരിശം പിടിച്ച വൈസ്രോയി കോഴിക്കോട്ടേക്ക് വരുന്ന എൺപതു കപ്പലുകൾ ഡോമിംഗോ മെസ്ക്വീറ്റയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ പിടിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. സാമൂതിരി പരാതിപ്പെട്ടാൽ, ”അതെ,അവർ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരാണ്, അതുകൊണ്ട് അവരെ പിടികൂടുന്നവർക്ക് അവരെ കൊല്ലാനും അധികാരമുണ്ട്” എന്ന് മറുപടി കൊടുക്കാനാണ് അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞത്. മെസ്ക്വീറ്റ 24 കപ്പലുകൾ പിടിച്ചെടുത്തു, കുഞ്ഞാലിയുടെ രണ്ടായിരത്തോളം ആളുകളെ വധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.)
ഒരുപക്ഷേ ആദ്യകാലത്ത് സാമൂതിരിയുടെ ഔദ്യോഗിക നാവികസേന ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ തന്നെ വളരെ പെട്ടെന്നു തന്നെ അവർ പ്രൈവറ്ററിങ്ങിലേക്കും, കടൽ കൊള്ളയിലേക്കും തിരിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു എന്നു കാണാം. 1564 കാലഘട്ടം മുതൽ കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ മുഹമ്മദീയർ പറങ്കി കപ്പലുകൾ മാത്രമല്ല, മറ്റുള്ള കപ്പലുകളും ആക്രമിച്ച് തുടങ്ങിയതായി തുഹ്ഫത്തുൽ മുജാഹിദീൻ തന്നെ സൂചന നൽകുന്നുണ്ട്.
“പറങ്കികളുടെ ഭാഗത്തുനിന്ന് മുകളിൽ പറഞ്ഞ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ അധികരിക്കുകയും, കച്ചവടം ക്ഷയിച്ച് മുഹമ്മദീയരുടെ അവസ്ഥ കൂടുതൽ മോശമാകുകയും ചെയ്തതോടെ വളപട്ടണം, തിക്കോടി, പന്തലായനി പോലുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള മുഹമ്മദീയർ പറങ്കികളുടെ അനുമതിപത്രം കൂടാതെ തന്നെ ചില ചെറിയ വള്ളങ്ങളിൽ ആയുധങ്ങൾ സംഭരിച്ച് എതിർക്കാനുള്ള ഉദ്ദേശത്തിൽ തന്നെ കടലിൽ പോകാൻ തുടങ്ങി. അങ്ങനെ പല രാജ്യക്കാരുടെയും അനേകം കപ്പലുകൾ പിടിച്ചെടുക്കുകയും, അനേകം പേരെ തടവിലാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അങ്ങനെ വളരെ ധനം സമ്പാദിച്ചു. ഇതുകൂടാതെ ഗുജറാത്തിലെയും, കൊങ്കണിലേയും, മറ്റു സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലെയും അവിശ്വാസികളുടെ ധാരാളം കപ്പലുകളും പിടിച്ചെടുത്തു. ഇതിന്റെ ഫലമായി പറങ്കികളുടെ കടൽവ്യാപാരത്തിലെ ലാഭം വളരെ കുറയുകയും വലിയ പടക്കപ്പലുകളുടെ അകമ്പടിയില്ലാതെ കടൽ യാത്ര അസാധ്യമാകുകയുംചെയ്തു”. അങ്ങനെ മുഹമ്മദീയർ കൊള്ളയടി വ്യാപകമാക്കുകയും, അതനുസരിച്ച് കൊള്ളയടിക്കാനുള്ള പറങ്കികപ്പലുകളുടെ എണ്ണം കുറയുകയും ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ, അവർ മുസ്‌ലിംകളുടെ സ്വത്തും കവരാൻ തുടങ്ങി എന്ന് ഷെയ്ഖ് സൈനുദ്ധീൻ പറയുന്നു. മുസ്‌ലിംകളുടെ സ്വത്ത് കൈവശപ്പെടുത്താൻ പാടില്ല എന്ന കൊള്ളക്കിറങ്ങും മുൻപുള്ള കരാർ പലരും പാലിക്കാതായി എന്നദ്ദേഹം പരാതിപ്പെടുന്നു.
“പറങ്കികളെ കൊള്ളയടിക്കുന്നത് ആവശ്യത്തിന് തികയാതായപ്പോൾ അവർ മുഹമ്മദീയരുടെ സ്വത്തും കയ്യടക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. മിക്ക കപ്പലുകളിലും മുഹമ്മദീയരെ കൂടാതെ അവിശ്വാസികൾക്കും മുതൽമുടക്കുണ്ട്. അത്തരം കപ്പലുകളും, അതിലെ മുതലുകളും പിടിച്ചെടുക്കുമ്പോൾ, അതിലൊരു ഭാഗത്തിന്റെ അവകാശി മുഹമ്മദീയരാണ്. അത് കൈവശപ്പെടുത്താൻ പാടില്ല എന്ന് യാത്രക്കു തിരിക്കും മുൻപുള്ള കരാർ അവർ പാലിക്കുന്നില്ല. അതിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥന് ഒരു തരത്തിലുമുള്ള നഷ്ടപരിഹാരവും കൊടുക്കുന്നില്ല. അങ്ങനെ തെറ്റായി നേടിയ ധനം സ്ഥലത്തെ രാജാവുമായി പങ്കു വയ്ക്കുന്നതല്ലാതെ അവർക്കു വേണ്ടി സംസാരിക്കാൻ ആരുമില്ല.” (തുഹ്ഫത്തുൽ മുജാഹിദീൻ)
കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ സാമൂതിരിക്ക് ഇങ്ങനെ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരുമായി ബന്ധമുണ്ട് എന്നത് പരസ്യമായ രഹസ്യമായിരുന്നു. 1588 ല്‍ മലബാര്‍ സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ച വെനീസില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു വ്യാപാരിയായ സീസര്‍ ഫ്രെഡറിക്ക് (Cesare Federici) പറയുന്നത് നോക്കുക.
“കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ രാജാവ് വിഗ്രഹാരാധകനും, പോര്‍ട്ടുഗീസുകാരുടെ വലിയ ശത്രുവുമാണ്. അവരുമായി എപ്പോളും യുദ്ധവുമാണ്. അദ്ദേഹവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രാജ്യവും വിശേഷമായ ഒരു കൂട്ടം കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ കേന്ദ്രമാണ്. “കാര്‍പോസയിലെ മൂറുകള്‍” (Moores of Carposa) എന്നാണ് അവര്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. കാരണം അവര്‍ തലയില്‍ വലിയ തൊപ്പി ധരിക്കും. ഇവര്‍ കടലില്‍ നിന്ന് സമ്പാദിക്കുന്ന കൊള്ളമുതലുകള്‍ കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ രാജാവുമായി പങ്കിടും. അദ്ദേഹം ഇവര്‍ക്ക് ഇഷ്ടം പോലെ പ്രവർത്തിക്കാനുള്ള അനുവാദം കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതിനാല്‍ ഈ തീരത്ത് കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ ആധിക്യം കാരണം നല്ല ആയുധസജ്ജമായ വലിയ കപ്പലുകള്‍ ഇല്ലാതെയോ, പോര്‍ട്ടുഗീസുകാരുടെ ഒപ്പമല്ലാതെയോ യാത്ര ചെയ്യാനാകില്ല”.
1584 ഓടെ സാമൂതിരിയും, കുഞ്ഞാലിയും തമ്മിൽ അസ്വാരസ്യങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയതായി ഡച്ച് സഞ്ചാരിയുമായിരുന്ന ജാന്‍ ഹൈജീന്‍ വാന്‍ ലിങ്കോസ്റ്റൻ (Jan Huyghen van Linschoten) സൂചന നൽകുന്നുണ്ട്.
1584 ൽ സാമൂതിരിയുടെ ഒരു പ്രതിനിധി ഗോവയിൽ സന്ധി സംഭാഷണത്തിനായി പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാരെ സന്ദർശിച്ച കാര്യം അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. കടലിൽ കുഴപ്പങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നവർ തന്റെ പ്രജകളല്ലെന്നും, ഇതൊന്നും നടക്കുന്നത് തന്റെ അറിവോ, സമ്മതമോ കൂടാതെയാണെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ സാമൂതിരി കൊള്ളക്കാരെ ശിക്ഷിക്കാൻ പോർട്ടുഗീസ് വൈസ്രോയിക്ക് പൂർണ്ണ സമ്മതവും കൊടുത്തു എന്ന് ലിങ്കോസ്റ്റൻ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
കുഞ്ഞാലി തന്നെ അനുസരിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്ന് സാമൂതിരി പറഞ്ഞത് സത്യമായിരിക്കാം. കൊള്ളമുതലിന്റെ കൃത്യമായ വിഹിതം കിട്ടണം എന്നല്ലാതെ കുഞ്ഞാലിയെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാൻ സാമൂതിരി കാര്യമായി ശ്രമിച്ചുമില്ല. കുഞ്ഞാലിയുടെ അതിക്രമങ്ങൾ കൂടിയതോടെ സാമൂതിരി പതുക്കെ അകലാൻ തുടങ്ങി.
കുഞ്ഞാലിമാർ കൊള്ളയിലൂടെ ലഭിച്ച സമ്പാദ്യം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ആലി രാജാവിനെപ്പോലെ സ്വന്തമായി രാജ്യം സ്ഥാപിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമം തുടങ്ങി.
ഡോം അന്റോണിയോ ഡി നൊറോണ (1571-1573) പോർട്ടുഗീസ് വൈസ്രോയി ആയിരിക്കുന്ന കാലത്താണ് പട്ടു മരക്കാർ എന്ന കുഞ്ഞാലി മൂന്നാമൻ സാമൂതിരിയുടെ അനുവാദത്തോടെ പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാരെ ആക്രമിക്കാൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ പുതുപട്ടണത്ത് കോട്ട പണിത് അവിടെ വൻതോതിൽ ആയുധങ്ങൾ ശേഖരിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. കോട്ട പണിയാൻ മുഗൾ ചക്രവർത്തി ഒരു ശില്പിയെ അയച്ചു കൊടുത്തതായി പറയുന്നു. ഈജിപ്ത്, തുർക്കി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും സഹായം കിട്ടി. “മരക്കാര്‍ കോട്ട” എന്നാണ് സഞ്ചാരിയായ ഫ്രാന്‍സ്വാ പൈറാര്‍ഡ് ഡെ ലവാല്‍ (François Pyrard de Laval) ഈ സ്ഥലത്തെ വിളിക്കുന്നത്. പോര്‍ട്ടുഗീസ്‌ രേഖകളില്‍ ഈ കോട്ടയും ചുറ്റുമുള്ള പട്ടണവും “കുഞ്ഞാലി” എന്നാണ് അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തി കാണുന്നത്. പട്ടു മരക്കാർ തന്റെ കപ്പലുകളെ വിദേശികളുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ നവീകരിച്ചു. കടലില്‍ പട്രോളിങ് നടത്താന്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ കപ്പലുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കി, ജർമ്മൻകാരുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ വലിയ തോക്കുകൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കി. ഗുജറാത്ത് തീരം മുതല്‍ കന്യാകുമാരി വരെ ഈ മലബാറിലെ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലായിരുന്നു.
ഇതേ സമയം മലബാറിലെ മാപ്പിളമാർ കുഞ്ഞാലിയെ ഏതാണ്ട് രാജാവായി അംഗീകരിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. കുഞ്ഞാലിമാരുടെ സ്ഥലമായ പൊന്നാനിയിൽ പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാർക്ക് കോട്ട കെട്ടാൻ സാമൂതിരി അനുവാദം കൊടുത്തത് കുഞ്ഞാലിക്ക് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടില്ല.
അഹങ്കാരം മൂത്ത കുഞ്ഞാലി ഒരു നായര്‍ സ്ത്രീയെ ബലമായി മതം മാറ്റി, സാമൂതിരിയുടെ ഒരു ആനയുടെ വാല്‍ വെട്ടി മാറ്റി, ഒരു നായർ രാജാവിനെ കുടുമ മുറിച്ച് അപമാനിച്ച് അയാളുടെ രാജ്യം പിടിച്ചെടുത്തു, (ഷന്ധീകരിച്ചു എന്നും പറയുന്നു) അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ മുടിയും, മുലയും അരിഞ്ഞു എന്നൊക്കെ കഥകളുണ്ട്. ഇതൊന്നും പോരാതെ കുഞ്ഞാലി മലബാര്‍ മുസ്‌ലീമുകളുടെ രാജാവ്, കടല്‍ യാത്രയുടെ രാജകുമാരന്‍, അറബിക്കടലിന്റെ അധികാരി, മുതലായ സ്ഥാനപ്പേരുകള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കാനും തുടങ്ങി. (സമുദ്രത്തിന്റെ അധിപൻ എന്നത് സാമൂതിരിയുടെ അധികാര സ്ഥാനമാണ്. “കുന്നലക്കോൻ” (കുന്നിന്റെയും, അലകളുടെയും അധികാരി. അതിന്റെ സംസ്‌കൃത രൂപമാണ് സമുദ്രഗിരിരാജ അഥവാ സാമൂതിരി രാജ എന്നത്. ) പുതുപട്ടണത്തിലെ കുഞ്ഞാലിക്കോട്ടയില്‍ അന്നത്തെ ശക്തമായ എല്ലാ മുസ്ലിം രാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും, മുഗള്‍ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തുനിന്നും, മെക്കയില്‍ നിന്നും വരെയുള്ള പ്രതിനിധികള്‍ വന്നു പോയിരുന്നു. ഈ വ്യാപക ബന്ധങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് അംഗീകൃത രാജാവാകാനും കുഞ്ഞാലി ശ്രമിച്ചു. മലബാറിലെ മുസ്ലീംകളെല്ലാം കുഞ്ഞാലിയെ അവരുടെ രാജാവായി കരുതാന്‍ മാത്രം അദ്ദേഹം പ്രതാപവാനായി.
കുഞ്ഞാലി ഒടുവിൽ പോർട്ടുഗീസ് കപ്പലുകൾ മാത്രമല്ല, സാമൂതിരിയുടെ കപ്പലുകൾ പോലും പിടിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. അതോടെ സാമൂതിരിക്ക് ഏതാണ്ട് മതിയായി. താൻ നട്ടുവളർത്തിയ മരം തന്റെ പുരയ്ക്കു നേരെ ചാഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ സാമൂതിരി തന്നെ അത് വെട്ടാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. തനിക്ക് കണ്ണൂരിലെ കോലത്തിരിയുടെ അവസ്ഥ വരും എന്ന് എന്നു തോന്നിയ സാമൂതിരി കുഞ്ഞാലിക്കെതിരെ തിരിഞ്ഞു.
കുഞ്ഞാലിമാരുടെ കാലശേഷവും സാമൂതിരി കൊള്ളമുതലിന്റെ പങ്കുപറ്റുന്നത് അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചില്ല എന്നാണ് 1608 ൽ കോഴിക്കോട് സന്ദർശിച്ച ഫ്രാന്‍സ്വാ പൈറാര്‍ഡ് ഡെ ലവാല്‍ (François Pyrard de Laval-The Voyage of François Pyrard of Laval to the East Indies, the Maldives, the Moluccas, and Brazil) എന്ന ഫ്രഞ്ച് സഞ്ചാരിയുടെ യാത്രാവിവരണം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.
“രാജാവിന് മലബാറിലെ എല്ലാ കടല്‍കൊള്ളക്കാരുമായി കൊള്ളമുതലിന്റെ ഓഹരിയും, സമ്മാനങ്ങളും നല്‍കണമെന്ന് രഹസ്യമായി കരാറുണ്ട് എന്ന് എനിക്ക് വ്യക്തമായി അറിയാം.
ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍ കുട്ടി ഹമീദിന്റെ കൂടെ രാത്രിയില്‍ ആരും കാണാതെ സാമൂതിരിയുടെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുമായി രഹസ്യ കൂടികാഴ്ചക്ക് കൂടെപോയതില്‍ നിന്ന് ഞാന്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ കാര്യമാണ് ഇത്. ഞാന്‍ പലപ്പോഴും കണ്ടിട്ടുള്ള പോലെയും, രാജാവിന്റെ ഉദ്ധ്യോഗസ്ഥര്‍ എന്നോട് സമ്മതിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പോലെയും മലബാറിലെ മറ്റു കപ്പിത്താന്‍മാരും, പ്രമാണിമാരും ഇതുതന്നെയാണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഇതിനു കാരണമുണ്ട്. സാമൂതിരി അവരെ എല്ലാതരത്തിലും സഹായിക്കും, അവര്‍ക്ക് ആവശ്യമുള്ളപ്പോള്‍ പണം കടം നല്‍കും. അവരത് പിന്നീട് പലിശ സഹിതം പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായും തിരിച്ചു നല്‍കും.
ഓരോ വര്‍ഷവും അനേകായിരം പേര് സാമൂതിരിയുടെ ദേശത്തു നിന്ന് കടലില്‍ കൊള്ളയടിക്കാന്‍ പോകും. കരയില്‍ ഈ കൊള്ളക്കാര്‍ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മാന്യരും, പ്രമാണിമാരും ആയിരിക്കും. അവര്‍ ദിവസേനെ എന്നോണം പോർട്ടിഗീസുകാരുമായുള്ള സമാധാന ഉടമ്പടി ലംഘിക്കാന്‍ സാമൂതിരിയെ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.” (പൈറാര്‍ഡ് ഡെ ലവാല്‍)
പൈറാര്‍ഡ് ഡെ ലവാല്‍ കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ രീതികൾ വിവരിക്കുന്നത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്.
“കടല്‍ തീരത്ത് നാട്ടിയ കുറ്റികളില്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്നു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ചില നിരീക്ഷണ ഗോപുരങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ചക്രവാളത്തില്‍ കപ്പലുകള്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ടോ എന്ന് നോക്കാന്‍ ഇതില്‍ കാവല്‍ക്കാരുണ്ട്. ദൂരെ പോർട്ടുഗീസ് കപ്പലുകൾ കണ്ടാല്‍ ഇവര്‍ ആക്രമണത്തിന് തയ്യാറാകും. ഈ കൊള്ളക്കാര്‍ കുറെയധികം ധനം സമ്പാദിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്, കാരണം നൌകകളുടെയും, പത്തേമാരികളുടെയും ചിലവ് കൂടാതെ പ്രദേശത്തെ നായര്‍ രാജാവിന് ഓഹരി കൊടുക്കണം, കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ സാമൂതിരിക്ക് കൊടുക്കണം, അവരുടെ രാജാവായിരുന്ന അന്തരിച്ച കുഞ്ഞാലിക്ക് സമ്മാനങ്ങള്‍ കൊടുക്കണം, അവരുടെ കൂട്ടാളികൾക്കു കൊടുക്കണം, അവരുടെ പുരോഹിതര്‍ക്കും, പള്ളിക്കും, സിയാറത്തിനും കൊടുക്കണം.
ഈ കൊള്ളക്കാര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു നേതാവില്ല. ആക്രമണത്തിന് പോകുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരാളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കും. അയാള്‍ക്ക്‌ പ്രത്യേക സമ്മാനം എന്തെങ്കിലും കൊടുത്തെങ്കിലായി. ബാക്കി അവര്‍ തുല്യമായി വീതിക്കും.” (പൈറാര്‍ഡ് ഡെ ലവാല്‍)
കൊള്ളക്കാര്‍ എല്ലാ കപ്പലുകളെയും ആക്രമിക്കാറുണ്ട് എന്നാണ് ഡെ ലവാല്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. കൊള്ള ഒരു മോശം തൊഴിലായി തങ്ങൾ കണക്കാക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നവർ പറയുന്നതായി അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതുന്നു. ഈ തൊഴില്‍ തലമുറയായി കൈമാറി കിട്ടിയതാണ്. കുഞ്ഞാലി നാലാമന്റെ ഒരു മരുമകനായ ഒരു കുട്ടിഹമീദുമായി ചങ്ങാത്തത്തിലായ ഡെ ലവാല്‍ കോട്ടയുടെ അപ്പോഴത്തെ അവസ്ഥ വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. (ഈ കുട്ടിഹമീദിന്റെ ഇളയ സഹോദരനാണ് 1620 കൾ വരെയെങ്കിലും മലബാർ തീരം വിറപ്പിച്ച കൊള്ളക്കാരനായിരിക്കുന്ന ഡോം പെഡ്രോ റോഡ്രിഗ്ഗ്‌സ് എന്ന അലി മരക്കാർ. പിന്നീട് ഈ റോഡ്രിഗസിനെ ഗോവയിൽ വച്ച് പരിചയപ്പെട്ട കാര്യവും ഡെ ലവാല്‍ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.)
ഡെ ലവാല്‍ തുടരുന്നു……“കുഞ്ഞാലിയുടെ കോട്ടയുടെ ചുവരുകള്‍ രണ്ടാള്‍ ഉയരത്തില്‍ ഇപ്പോളും കാണാം. പോര്‍ട്ടുഗീസുകാരുമായി ഇനിയും യുദ്ധമുണ്ടായാല്‍ രാജാവിന് അത് നിഷ്പ്രയാസം കേടുപാടുകള്‍ മാറ്റി ഉപയോഗയോഗ്യമാക്കാം. ഡച്ചുക്കാര്‍ക്ക് അത് കൈമാറാന്‍ രാജാവ് ആലോചിച്ചിരുന്നു. സ്പെയിൻ രാജാവിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളായ ഡച്ചുകാരെ സാമൂതിരി സ്വീകരിച്ചതില്‍ പോര്‍ട്ടുഗീസുകാര്‍ പരാതി പറഞ്ഞു. തങ്ങള്‍ ഗോവയിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു പോകാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു എന്നും പറഞ്ഞു. താന്‍ തന്റെ ഇഷ്ടം പോലെ ചെയ്യുമെന്നും, താനാരെയും ഇവിടെ നിര്‍ബന്ധമായി പിടിച്ചു വച്ചിട്ടില്ലെന്നും സാമൂതിരി മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു.
ഈ കുഞ്ഞാലിക്ക് (കുഞ്ഞാലി നാലാമന്‍) ഒരു മകനുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹവും ഒരു മരക്കാരാണ്. ഞാന്‍ പലപ്പോഴും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കാണാറുണ്ട്‌. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വീട്ടില്‍ പോയി വിരുന്നു കഴിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിതാവിന്റെ മരണശേഷം സാമൂതിരി ആരെയും ആ സ്ഥാനത്ത് (കുഞ്ഞാലി) നിയമിച്ചിട്ടില്ലങ്കിലും, ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ മകനായും അംഗീകരിച്ചിട്ടില്ലെങ്കിലും ബാക്കി എല്ലാവരും ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ വളരെ ബഹുമാനത്തോടെയാണ് കാണുന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് വേറെ പലരും ഈ സ്ഥാനത്തിനു നോട്ടമിടുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ആ പദവി സാമൂതിരി വേറെ ആര്‍ക്കും കൊടുത്തിട്ടില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഇവിടെ സമാധാനമുണ്ട്”.
കണ്ണൂരിനും, കോഴിക്കോടിനും ഇടയിലുള്ള മുറ്റുങ്ങൽ എന്ന രാജ്യമാണ് കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ കേന്ദ്രം എന്ന് ഡെ ലവാല്‍ പറയുന്നു. മുറ്റുങ്ങൽ കൂടാതെ അടുത്തുള്ള ചോമ്പായി, വടകര തുറമുഖങ്ങളും ഇവരുടെ വിഹാരകേന്ദ്രമാണ് എന്നും അദ്ദേഹം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. വടകരയിലെ വാഴുന്നോർ എന്ന നായർ പ്രമാണിയാണ് കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ രക്ഷാധികാരിയെന്നും ഡെ ലവാല്‍ പറയുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രാജ്യം വഴിയാണ് അവർ കൊള്ളമുതലുകൾ കടത്തുന്നത്.
“മരക്കാര്‍ കോട്ടയും പരിസരവും ഇപ്പോൾ സാമൂതിരിയുടെ കൈവശമാണ്. കൊള്ളക്കാര്‍ ഇപ്പോൾ അവിടെ നൌകകള്‍ അടുപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ധൈര്യം കാണിക്കുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും (കുഞ്ഞാലിയുടെ മരണ ശേഷം) സ്ഥലത്തെ ആളുകളെല്ലാം ഇപ്പോളും കൊള്ളയില്‍ തുടരുന്നുണ്ട്. വന്‍കിടക്കാര്‍ അവരുടെ നൌകകള്‍ വടകര രാജാവിന്റെയും മറ്റും തുറമുഖങ്ങളില്‍ അടുപ്പിക്കും. കൊള്ളമുതല്‍ കര വഴി കടത്തും”. മോഷണമുതലുകൾ അവിടത്തെ അങ്ങാടികളിൽ തന്നെ ഈ കൊള്ളക്കാർ വിൽക്കുന്ന കാര്യവും ഡെ ലവാൽ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
”കോഴിക്കോട്, വടകര ഭാഗങ്ങളിലെ പല നദീമുഖങ്ങളും തുറമുഖങ്ങളും കടല്‍ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ വിഹാരകേന്ദ്രമാണ്. മുഹമ്മദീയര്‍ അപൂര്‍വ്വമായേ മറ്റു പണികള്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നുള്ളൂ. അവര്‍ മിക്കവാറും കച്ചവടക്കാരോ, കൊള്ളക്കാരോ ആണ്. തീരത്തുള്ള കച്ചവടക്കാര്‍ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ നൌകകള്‍ വരുന്നതറിഞ്ഞാല്‍ സാധനങ്ങള്‍ കുറഞ്ഞ വിലക്കുവാങ്ങാന്‍ തയ്യാറെടുക്കും. മോഷണത്തിന് വിധേയരായ അതെ വ്യാപാരികളുടെ ചന്തയില്‍ തന്നെ അവ വില്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. ഈ വ്യാപാരികള്‍ അവരുടെ മുതലുകള്‍ തിരിച്ചറിയുമെങ്കിലും പലപ്പോളും അവ രണ്ടാമതും പണം നൽകി തിരികെ വാങ്ങും”. പെട്രോ ഡെല്ലാ വാൽ (Pietro Della Valle) എന്ന ഇറ്റാലിയൻ സഞ്ചാരിയും 1623 ൽ കോഴിക്കോട് സന്ദർശിച്ചപ്പോൾ അവിടത്തെ മുഹമ്മദീയരായ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരെക്കുറിച്ചും, കോഴിക്കോട് അങ്ങാടിയിൽ കൊള്ള മുതലുകൾ പരസ്യമായി വിൽക്കാൻ വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതു കണ്ട കാര്യവും പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
“….തീരദേശം മുഴുവൻ മലബാറികൾ എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന, വളരെ കാലം മുൻപാണെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് വന്നു ചേർന്നവരാണ്. മാർക്കോപോളോ നാനൂറു കൊല്ലം മുൻപ് ഇവരെക്കുറിച്ച് എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അവർ വിജാതീയരുമായി ഇടകലർന്ന്, അവരുടെ ഭാഷ സംസ്സാരിച്ച് ജീവിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അവർ മുഹമ്മദീയ മതക്കാരാണ്. ഇവരിൽകൂടി ഈ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വലിയൊരു ഭാഗം മലബാർ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. മലബാറിലെ കൊള്ളക്കാർ തുടർച്ചയായി കടൽകൊള്ള നടത്തുന്നതായി ഇന്ത്യ മുഴുവൻ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിനാൽ കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ അങ്ങാടിയിൽ നേരത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിച്ച വിൽപ്പനപ്പണ്ടങ്ങൾ കൂടാതെ പോർട്ടുഗീസ് കപ്പലുകളിൽ നിന്ന് തട്ടിയെടുത്ത കണ്ടമാനം വാളുകൾ, ആയുധങ്ങൾ, പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ, ഗോവയിലെ വസ്ത്രങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയ വസ്തുവഹകളും കണ്ടു. ഈ വസ്തുക്കൾ മോഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെട്ടവയാക കൊണ്ട് (മതത്തിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്താക്കും എന്ന ഭയം കൊണ്ട്) ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികൾ അവ വാങ്ങാറില്ല”.
പീറ്റർ മുണ്ടിഎന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സഞ്ചാരി Itinerary of the World എന്ന പേരിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച സഞ്ചാരകുറിപ്പുകളിൽ 1630 കളിൽ മലബാറിലെ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരെ കണ്ട അനുഭവം വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ സാമൂതിരി തന്റെ രാജ്യത്തുനിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കിയ ബാബാ റാവത്ത് എന്നൊരു കൊള്ളക്കാരനെക്കുറിച്ചും, കൊള്ളക്കാർ പിടിച്ചെടുത്ത ഒരു ഡച്ച് കപ്പലിലെ ചരക്കുകൾ ഏഴിമലയിൽ കണ്ട കാര്യവും അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
“ഇവിടെ വച്ച് ബാബാ റാവത്തും (Babaraut) സംഘവും ഞങ്ങളുടെ അടുത്തെത്തി. കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ രാജാവ് അയാളുടെയും, അനുയായികളുടെയും വീട്ചുട്ടുകരിച്ച് അവരെ തന്റെ നാട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കിയതുകൊണ്ട് അയാളുടെ ഇപ്പോളത്തെ ആസ്ഥാനം ഭട്കൽ ആണെന്ന്പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. അവരുടെ അംഗസംഖ്യ അറുന്നൂറോ എഴുന്നൂറോ പേരിൽ കുറയാതെയുണ്ട്. തീരത്തുടനീളം ഇയാളെപ്പോലെ പ്രസിദ്ധരായ അനേകം കൊള്ളക്കാരുള്ളതു കൊണ്ട് പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാരുടെ കൂടെ സംഘമായിപോകുന്നവരല്ലാതെ ആരും ഇവരിൽനിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടാറില്ല. ഏഴിമലയിലെ ആളുകൾ കൊള്ളക്കാരും, ആതിഥേയമര്യാദയില്ലാത്തവരും ആയതുകൊണ്ട് ആരും കരക്കിറങ്ങിയില്ല”. ഇനി ഡച്ച് സഞ്ചാരിയായിരുന്ന ജോണ്‍ ന്യൂഹോഫ് (Johan Nieuhof 1618-1672) മലബാറിലെ കടൽകൊള്ളക്കാരെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നതു നോക്കാം.
“മലബാറിലെ മുഹമ്മദീയര്‍ എല്ലാവരും ഒന്നുകില്‍ കച്ചവടക്കാരോ, കടല്‍ കൊള്ളക്കാരോ ആണ്. അവര്‍ ശത്രുക്കളെ നേരിടാന്‍ പോകുമ്പോള്‍ എല്ലാവരും ഒരുമിച്ചു കൂടി കുറച്ചു വെറ്റിലയെടുത്ത് അതില്‍ തൊട്ടു പരസ്പരം സഹായിച്ചു കൊള്ളാമെന്ന് സത്യം ചെയ്യും. കപ്പല്‍ കീഴടക്കിക്കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ അതിലുള്ള എല്ലാവരെയും കൊള്ളയടിക്കും. കപ്പിത്താനും ഉയര്‍ന്ന ആളുകളും അതിലെ മികച്ച സാധനങ്ങള്‍ എടുക്കും. ബാക്കിയുള്ളത് എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കുമായി വീതിക്കും. ഇവര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു തലവന്‍ ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും അവരുടെ ഇടയില്‍ കലഹങ്ങള്‍ അപൂര്‍വ്വമായേ ഉണ്ടാകാറുള്ളൂ. മലബാറിലെ പല പണക്കാരും കപ്പലുകളും അതില്‍ പടയാളികളെയും അടിമകളെയും എപ്പോളും കടലില്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കി നിര്‍ത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടാകും. കപ്പിത്താന്‍ മാത്രം ഇടക്കിടക്ക് കരയില്‍ വന്ന് കൊള്ളമുതലുകള്‍ കൈമാറും. കച്ചവടക്കാര്‍ ലാഭം കിട്ടുമെങ്കില്‍ ഇത് സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുടെയോ, ശത്രുകളുടെയോ ആണോ എന്നൊന്നും നോക്കാതെ ഒരു മടിയും കൂടാതെ വാങ്ങും. മലബാറിലെ മുഹമ്മദീയര്‍ക്ക് ധനമല്ലാതെ വേറെ നോട്ടമൊന്നും ഇല്ല”. മലബാറിലെ കൊള്ളക്കാർ 200-250 പേർ വീതം കൊള്ളുന്ന 10 -15 നൗകകളിൽ കൂട്ടമായാണ് കടലിൽ സഞ്ചരിച്ചിരുന്നത് എന്ന് 1680 കളിൽ മലബാറിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിച്ച ജീൻ ബാപിസ്റ് റ്റാവേർനിയർ (Travels in India by Jean Baptiste Tavernier) രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. 1672 ൽ മലബാർ തീരത്ത് സഞ്ചരിച്ച ആബെ കാരി എന്ന ഫ്രഞ്ച് പുരോഹിതനും (The Travels of Abbe Carre in India and the Near East) തലശ്ശേരിക്കടുത്തുള്ള കോട്ട എന്ന സ്ഥലം കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച് കാംബേ കടലിടുക്ക് വരെ കൊള്ള നടത്തുന്ന മലബാറിലേ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. വടകരയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഏറ്റവും സമ്പന്നരായ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ പ്രദേശം എന്നാണ് ആബെ കാരി പറയുന്നത്. കുഞ്ഞാലിയുടെ കോട്ട നിൽക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലമായ കോട്ടക്കൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ കേന്ദ്രമായി ഇതേ കാലത്തുതന്നെ മലബാറിൽ വന്ന അലക്‌സാണ്ടർ ഹാമിൽട്ടണും സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
ഒരു സഞ്ചാരിയും കപ്പലിലെ സർജ്ജനായി പല രാജ്യങ്ങളും സന്ദർശിച്ച ചാൾസ് ഗബ്രീയേൽ ഡെല്ലൻ (1649-1710) എന്ന ഫ്രഞ്ചുകാരൻ 1670 കളിൽ അദ്ദേഹം കണ്ട മലബാറിനെക്കുറിച്ച്…….
“ഈ പ്രദേശത്തുള്ള മുഹമ്മദീയർ വളരെ അധമരും, ചതിയരുമാണ്. ഭൂരിഭാഗവും കടലിൽ കൊള്ള നടത്തിയാണ് ജീവിക്കുന്നത്. എതിർപ്പുണ്ടാകില്ല എന്ന് അവർക്കു തോന്നുന്ന എല്ലാ കപ്പലുകളും ഇവർ ആക്രമിക്കും. ഇവർ അടിമകളോട് ഏറ്റവും ഹീനമായ ക്രൂരത കാട്ടും എന്നതാണ് ഇവരെക്കുറിച്ച് ഏറ്റവും ഭയമുളവാക്കുന്ന കാര്യം. ഇവരുടെ യാനങ്ങൾ നമ്മുടെ തുഴയുള്ള കപ്പലുകൾ പോലെയാണ്. അഞ്ഞൂറോ, അറുന്നൂറോ ആളുകൾ തുഴയുന്ന ഇത്തരം നൗകകളെ “പാറോ” എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. ഇന്ത്യൻ തീരം മുഴുവൻ, ചെങ്കടൽ വരെ പോലും ഇവരുടെ അധീനതയിലാണ്. ഇവർ വളരെ അപൂർവ്വമായേ യൂറോപ്യൻ കപ്പലുകൾ ആക്രമിക്കാറുള്ളൂ. വിശേഷിച്ചും പ്രതിരോധം ഉണ്ടായാൽ. അഥവാ ഏതെങ്കിലും കപ്പൽ കീഴടക്കിയാൽ അത് നേരിട്ട് ആക്രമിച്ചായിരിക്കില്ല, പതിയിരുന്ന് ആക്രമിച്ചായിരിക്കും.
ഈ കൊള്ളക്കാർ മൂലം ഇന്ത്യൻ കടലിലൂടെയുള്ള സഞ്ചാരം വളരെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാണെങ്കിലും, കരയിലൂടെയുള്ള യാത്ര വളരെ സുരക്ഷിതമാണ്. വിശേഷിച്ചും നിങ്ങളെ അനുഗമിക്കാൻ നായന്മാർ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ. കാരണം ഇവിടെ പൊതുവഴിയിൽ വച്ചുള്ള കൊള്ളയും, മോഷണവും അത്യധികം കർശനമായി ശിക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടും. അതേസമയം കടലിലെ കൊള്ള ആർക്കും ചെയ്യാം എന്ന മട്ടാണ്. ഈ ഭാഗത്തെ രാജാക്കന്മാർ പുറംകടലിൽ വച്ചു നടക്കുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങളിൽ ഇടപെടാറില്ല. അവിടെ ബലഹീനൻ ശക്തന് കീഴ്‌പ്പെട്ടേ പറ്റൂ. ഈ കൊള്ളക്കാർ അവക്ക് കിട്ടുന്ന കൊള്ളമുതലിന്റെ, അത് പണമായാലും അടിമകളായാലും പത്തിലൊന്ന് അവരുടെ രാജാവിനു കൊടുക്കണം. കടലിൽ ആരും ഇവരിൽനിന്ന് ഒഴിവാകുന്നില്ല. മതത്തിന്റെയോ, രാജ്യത്തിന്റെയോ വ്യതാസമില്ലാതെ കണ്ണിൽ പെടുന്ന എല്ലാവരെയും ഇവർ ആക്രമിക്കും. ഇവർ ബഹുമാനിക്കുന്ന രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ അനുമതി പത്രങ്ങളെ പോലും ഇവർ വിലവയ്ക്കില്ല.
ഇവരുടെ അയൽക്കാരോ, അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തുക്കളോ കടലിൽ വച്ച് ഇവരുടെ കയ്യിൽ പെട്ടാൽ പോലും അവരെ വെറുതെ വിടില്ല. ഏറ്റവും അപരിചിതരായവരോടു പെരുമാറുന്ന പോലെയേ പെരുമാറൂ. മോചനദ്രവ്യം കൊടുക്കുന്നതു വരെ അവർ ചങ്ങലയിൽ കിടക്കും. ഈ കൊള്ളക്കാർ മറ്റു മുഹമ്മദീയരെക്കാൾ വിവരം കെട്ടവരും, പ്രാകൃതരുമാണ്. വിഗ്രഹാരാധകരായ ആളുകളിൽനിന്ന് ഇവർക്കുള്ള വ്യത്യാസം അവരുടെ താടിയും, തലേക്കെട്ടും, കുപ്പായവും മാത്രമാണ്.
ഇവർ ഏതെങ്കിലും മുഹമ്മദീയരെയോ,വിഗ്രഹാരാധകരേയോ പിടികൂടിയാൽ കയ്യിലുള്ളതെല്ലാം പിടിച്ചു പറിക്കുക എന്നല്ലാതെ അപൂർവ്വമായേ അവരെ അടിമകളാക്കാറുള്ളൂ. അതല്ലെങ്കിൽ കനത്ത മോചനദ്രവ്യം നൽകാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ആളാകണം. ഏറ്റവും മോശം പെരുമാറ്റം ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളോടാണ്. അവർ അടിമയായിത്തന്നെ മരിക്കുമെന്ന് ഏതാണ്ട് ഉറപ്പാണ്. അതല്ലെങ്കിൽ മോചനദ്രവ്യം കൊടുക്കുകയോ, മുഹമ്മദീയ മതത്തിൽ ചേരുകയോ വേണം. എങ്കിൽ അവർ വളരെ ബഹുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുകയും, സാധാരണയായി അവരുടെ പാറോയുടെ കപ്പിത്താനാക്കുക പോലും ചെയ്യും.
അത്തരം ഒരു നൗക ആദ്യമായി പുറത്തിറക്കുമ്പോൾ അവരുടെ പ്രധാന ലക്‌ഷ്യം ആദ്യം കിട്ടുന്ന ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ അടിമയുടെ രക്തം കൊണ്ട് പുതിയ നൗക ആശീർവദിക്കുക ചെയ്യുക എന്നതാണ്. യൂറോപ്യന്മാരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാരാണ് അവരുടെ പ്രാകൃതമായ രക്തബലിക്ക് ഏറ്റവും അധികം വിധേയരാകാറുള്ളത്. ഈ കാരണം കൊണ്ടാണ് അവർ ഈ കടൽകൊള്ളക്കാരെ തങ്ങളുടെ ശത്രുക്കളായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. അതിനാൽ ഇവരെ പിടികിട്ടിയാൽ മിക്കവാറും അവരെ ഗോവക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകും. അവിടെ ചങ്ങലയിൽ കപ്പലിലെ തുഴക്കാരാക്കുകയോ, കോട്ടയിൽ ചങ്ങലക്കിടുകയോ ചെയ്യും. അവിടെനിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടാൻ പ്രയാസമാണ്. ഈ പ്രാകൃതർ മിക്കവാറും ഒരിക്കലും അവരുടെ ആളുകളെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കാറില്ല. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഇങ്ങനെ പിടിക്കപ്പെടുന്നവർ അവരുടെ പാറോയുടെ കപ്പിത്താനോ മറ്റോ ആകണം. എങ്കിലും മിക്കവാറും ഒരിക്കലും പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാർ അവരെ വിട്ടു കൊടുക്കാറില്ല. മോചനദ്രവ്യം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നതിനു പകരം അവരോടു ചെയ്ത ക്രൂരതയുടെ ശിക്ഷയായി തടവിൽ കിടന്നു മരിക്കട്ടെ എന്ന് കരുതുകയാണ് പതിവ്”. വടകര നിന്ന് മൂന്നു മൈൽ മാറി കടലിൽ എട്ടു മൈൽ ദൂരത്തിൽ വെളിയം കല്ല് എന്ന ഈ പാറ കാണാം. കുഞ്ഞാലി മരക്കാന്മാർ പറങ്കികൾ കൊണ്ടുപോയി കൊന്നിരുന്ന രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വത്തിന്റെ കല്ല് എന്ന രക്തസാക്ഷി പാറയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഹാമിൽട്ടൺ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. കോട്ടക്കലിലെ കൊള്ളക്കാർ ഒരു പറങ്കികപ്പൽ പിടിച്ചെടുത്ത് അതിലെ എല്ലാവരെയും ഇവിടെകൊണ്ടുവന്ന് ബലികൊടുത്തതിന്റെ ഓർമ്മക്കായാണ് ആ പാറക്ക് അങ്ങനെ പേര് വന്നതെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
ഒരു ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഡോക്ടറും സഞ്ചാരിയുമായ ജോൺ ഫ്രെയറും മലബാറിലെ കടൽകൊള്ളക്കാരെയും, അവർ കടൽ യാത്രികരെ ബലി കൊടുക്കുന്ന ഈ പാറയെക്കുറിച്ചും പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
“മംഗലാപുരത്ത് ഡച്ചുകാർക്ക് ഒരു കോട്ടയുണ്ട്. അവിടന്ന് ആറ് മൈൽ വടക്കോട്ടു മാറി ഫ്രഞ്ച് പതാകയും പാറുന്നുണ്ട്. അവിടന്ന് ഒരു ലീഗിനുള്ളിൽ ചാര നിറമുള്ള ഒരു പാറ വെള്ളത്തിനു മുകളിൽ എട്ടു ഫാത്തം ഉയരത്തിൽ കാണാം. മലബാറിലെ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാർ ചില ഇംഗ്ളീഷുകാരെ അവിടെ ക്രൂരമായി വധിച്ചതിന്റെ ഓർമ്മക്കായി വെള്ളത്താൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ട ആ പാറയെ രക്തസാക്ഷികളുടെ ദ്വീപ് എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്.ഇവർ ഈ തീരത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ഭയങ്കര കൊള്ളക്കാരാണ്. കരയിലുള്ള വലിയ പ്രമാണിമാരാണ് ഇവരെ കടലിൽ വിടുന്നത്. ഇവരിൽ പ്രധാനി ധർമ്മപട്ടണത്താണ് വസിക്കുന്നത്.” (A new account of East-India and Persia, in eight letters being nine years travels begun 1672 and finished 1681)
ഒരു കാർമലൈറ്റ് പുരോഹിതനായ ഫാദർ വിൻസെൻസോ 1656-57 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ എഴുതിയ ഒരു കത്തിൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ കയ്യിൽ പെടുന്ന ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ തടവുകാർ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന പീഡനങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചും, ഈ പാറയെക്കുറിച്ചും പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
“അവർ ചങ്ങലയിൽ വെയിലത്ത് വയലിൽ പണിയെടുക്കണം. കാര്യമായ മർദ്ദനവും ഉണ്ടാകും. പണി കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ നാറുന്ന തൊഴുത്തിൽ ചങ്ങലക്കിടും. വെറും മണ്ണിലാണ് അവർ ഉറങ്ങുന്നത്. കുടിക്കുന്നത് ചളിവെള്ളവും. ഭക്ഷണം ചീഞ്ഞ ചോറും അൽപ്പം ഉപ്പും. ആഴ്ചയിൽ പലതവണ അവരുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥന്റെ മുന്നിൽ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന് മോചനദ്രവ്യം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് അവരുടെ പരിചയക്കാർക്ക് നിർബന്ധിച്ച് കത്തുകളെഴുതിക്കും.
തുടക്കത്തിൽ എത്ര കിട്ടിയാലും പോര എന്നായിരിക്കും. ഭീമമായ ഈ തുക നൽകാൻ വിസമ്മതിച്ചാൽ കൊടിയ പീഡനമായിരിക്കും. പണം നൽകാമെന്ന് സമ്മതിച്ച ശേഷം അത് കൊടുത്തില്ലെങ്കിൽ പീഡനമേറ്റു മരിക്കേണ്ടി വരും. പലപ്പോഴും അവരെ തലകീഴായി കെട്ടിത്തൂക്കും. അടിയിൽ നനഞ്ഞ വൈക്കോൽ കൂട്ടിയിട്ടു പുകയിടും. ചിലപ്പോൾ തറയിൽ വലിച്ചു കെട്ടി പഴുതാരയെക്കൊണ്ട് വയറിൽ കടിപ്പിക്കും.അത് പഴുത്ത് അസഹ്യമായ വേദനയുണ്ടാക്കും. പോർട്ടുഗീസുകാരുടെ ശക്തി ക്ഷയിച്ചതോടെ ഇവിടെ ഈ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ ശല്യമാണ്. അവർ ഒരു കപ്പൽ കീഴടക്കിയാൽ തടവിലാകുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ ഒന്നുകിൽ മുഹമ്മദീയ മതം സ്വീകരിക്കണം, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കുഞ്ഞാലിപ്പാറയിൽ കൊണ്ടുപോയി ബലി കൊടുക്കും.”
കോഴിക്കോടു വച്ച് മാപ്പിളമാർ അവർ തടവിലാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്ന ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളെ മോചനദ്രവ്യം നൽകി മോചിപ്പിക്കാൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സമീപിച്ച കാര്യവും അദ്ദേഹം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. തങ്ങൾ തടവുകാരെ കണ്ടാൽ മോചനദ്രവ്യം ആവശപ്പെട്ട് അവരെ കൂടുതൽ പീഢിപ്പിക്കും എന്നതുകൊണ്ട് തങ്ങൾ പോയില്ല എന്നും ഈ പാതിരി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
കുഞ്ഞാലിയുടെ മരണത്തോടെ മലബാറിലെ കടൽ കൊള്ളയുടെ പുഷ്കലകാലം കഴിഞ്ഞെങ്കിലും, പിന്നെയും രണ്ടു നൂറ്റാണ്ടോളം മലബാർ തീരത്ത് കടൽ കൊള്ള തുടർന്നിരുന്നു. കുഞ്ഞാലിക്കു ശേഷം സാമൂതിരി കൊള്ളക്കാരോട് വലിയ മമത കാണിക്കാതായതോടെ അവരുടെ സംരക്ഷണം വടകരയിലെ വാഴുന്നവർ ഏറ്റെടുത്തു എന്ന് ഡെ ലവാല്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കൊള്ളയിലൂടെ വാഴുന്നവർ സമ്പന്നനായതോടെ കടൽ കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ നേതാവ് എന്ന ചീത്തപ്പേര് മാറണം എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. അതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ഡച്ചുകാരുമായി വ്യാപാരബന്ധത്തിനു ശ്രമിച്ചു. അവർക്കു സ്വന്തം ചിലവിൽ കോട്ട കെട്ടി ക്കൊടുക്കാമെന്നുള്ള വാഗ്‌ദാനം വച്ചു. അലക്‌സാണ്ടർ ഹാമിൽട്ടൺ വടകരയിലെ രാജാവ് ഈ കാര്യവുമായി തന്നെ സന്ദർശിച്ച കാര്യം പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഫ്രഞ്ചുകാരും, ഡച്ചുകാരും, ഇംഗ്ളീഷുകാർ തലശ്ശേരിയിലും, കോഴിക്കോടുമാണ് ചരക്കെടുക്കാൻ പോകുന്നത്, തന്റെ രാജ്യവുമായി അവർ കച്ചവടം ചെയ്യുന്നില്ല എന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പരാതി. കച്ചവട കപ്പലുകൾ കൊള്ളയടിക്കുന്ന രാജ്യം എന്ന ചീത്തപ്പേര് ഉള്ളതുകൊണ്ടാണ് അങ്ങനെ സംഭവിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് ഹാമിൽട്ടൺ അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് തുറന്നു പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.
