മാതൃഭാഷയുടെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനും വികാസത്തിനും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്ക് ശ്രീശങ്കരാചാര്യ സംസ്കൃത സർവ്വകലാശാല ഏർപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള പ്രദീപൻ പാമ്പിരികുന്ന് സ്മാരക മാതൃഭാഷാപുരസ്കാരത്തിന് ഈ വർഷം ഡോ.ജോർജ് ഇരുമ്പയം അർഹനായി.

അധ്യാപകൻ, സാഹിത്യ നിരൂപകൻ, ഗവേഷകൻ, പത്രാധിപർ, തുടങ്ങിയ നിലകളിൽ പ്രശസ്തനായ ഡോ. ജോർജ് ഇരുമ്പയം മലയാള ഭാഷാസംരക്ഷണത്തിന് വേണ്ടി നടത്തിയ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ മുൻനിർത്തിയാണ് ഈ പുരസ്കാരം നൽകുന്നത്. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസരംഗത്ത് മലയാളം നേരിടുന്ന അവഗണനകൾക്കെതിരെ സംഘടിതമായ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്ക് 1989ൽ തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചത് ഡോ. ഇരുമ്പയം നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയ മലയാള സംരക്ഷണ വേദിയാണ്. കേരളത്തിൽ മലയാളപഠനം പ്ലസ് ടു കോഴ്സിന്‍റെ ഭാഗമാക്കിയത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൂടി ശ്രമഫലമായാണ്. മലയാളം പ്രഥമഭാഷയാക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി അദ്ദേഹം നടത്തിയ പോരാട്ടങ്ങൾ വിജയത്തിലെത്തിയില്ലെങ്കിലും മാതൃഭാഷയോട് ജനങ്ങളിൽ അനുഭാവം വളർത്താൻ അവയ്ക്ക് സാധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

മലയാളം, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്, ഗാന്ധിയൻ ചിന്ത എന്നീ വിഷയങ്ങളിൽ എം. എ. നേടിയിട്ടുള്ള ഡോ. ജോർജ് ഇരുമ്പയം കേരളത്തിലെ സർക്കാർ കോളേജുകളിൽ മലയാളം അധ്യാപകനായിരുന്നു. എറണാകുളം മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജിൽ വകുപ്പു മേധാവിയായിരിക്കെ 1994ൽ സർവീസിൽ നിന്നു വിരമിച്ചു. നിരൂപണം, യാത്ര, കവിത, വിവർത്തനം, ജീവചരിത്രം എന്നീ വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലായി 35ൽ അധികം കൃതികളുടെ കർത്താവാണ്.

‘ മലയാള നോവൽ പത്തൊമ്പതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ’ എന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധ ഗ്രന്ഥം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഗവേഷണ പ്രബന്ധമാണ്. ഗാന്ധിജിയുടെ ആത്മകഥ ‘എന്റെ സത്യാന്വേഷണ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളുടെ കഥ’ മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്തത് ഡോ. ഇരുമ്പയമാണ്. ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന്റെ ഏഴു ലക്ഷത്തിലധികം കോപ്പികൾ ഇതിനകം വിറ്റു കഴിഞ്ഞു.

നവംബർ 16ന് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ചടങ്ങിൽ വൈസ് ചാൻസലർ ഡോ. എം. വി. നാരായണൻ പുരസ്കാരം സമർപ്പിക്കും. ഡോ. പി. പവിത്രൻ, ഡോ. സുനിൽ പി. ഇളയിടം, ഡോ. വത്സലൻ വാതുശ്ശേരി, ഡോ. എസ്. പ്രിയ, മുൻ രജിസ്ട്രാർ ഡോ. എം. ബി.ഗോപാലകൃഷ്ണൻ എന്നിവർ ഉൾപ്പെട്ട സമിതിയാണ് പുരസ്കാര ജേതാവിനെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്.
