സിക്കീം ഭൂട്ടാൻ ലോട്ടറികൾ ഇല്ലാതായതോടെ ലോട്ടറി ടിക്കറ്റ്‌ വിറ്റുള്ള ജീവിതം ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയെകൊണ്ട്‌ പറ്റാതായി. വരുമാനം വളരെ കുറഞ്ഞു. കേരള ഗവൺമന്റിന്റെ ടിക്കറ്റെടുക്കുന്നതിന്‌ ഒരു പരിധിയുണ്ട്‌. സിക്കീമിന്റേയും ഭൂട്ടാന്റേയും ആണെങ്കിൽ ഒരാൾ തന്നെ പലരിൽ നിന്നും വാങ്ങും. ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയിൽ നിന്ന് വാങ്ങുന്ന ടിക്കറ്റില്‍ ഇടയ്ക്കിടക്ക് പ്രൈസ്‌ വീഴുന്നതിനാല്‍ നല്ല ചിലവായിരുന്നു. ടിക്കറ്റ്‌ ബാക്കി വന്നാലും ചിലപ്പോൾ അയ്യായിരമോ പതിനായിരമോ ആ ടിക്കറ്റിൽ കിട്ടാറുണ്ട്‌.

ടിക്കറ്റ്‌ നിരത്തി വെക്കാനുള്ള പലക പിടിപ്പിച്ച സൈക്കിൾ അധിക സമയവും തള്ളിക്കൊണ്ടാണ്‌ ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടി വിൽപന നടത്തിയിരുന്നത്‌. സാധാരണയിൽ കവിഞ്ഞ തടിയുള്ളതിനാൽ ‘ആന സൈക്കിൾ ചവിട്ടുന്നു’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞ്‌ എല്ലാവരും കളിയാക്കും. അത്രയൊന്നും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും അൽപം തടി കൂടുതലാണ്‌.
ഭാര്യയും മക്കളുമുള്ള ഒരു മുപ്പത്തഞ്ചുകാരൻ തടിയന്‌ മറ്റെന്ത്‌ ജോലിയാണ്‌ പറ്റുക? ഇപ്പോള്‍ ആ പ്രതീക്ഷയും നശിച്ചു. ഇനിയെന്ത്‌..എന്നാലോചിച്ചിട്ട്‌ ഒരു പിടിയുമില്ല ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിക്ക്‌.
തറവാട്ടുവക അമ്പലത്തിലെ ഉത്സവമാണിന്ന്. പത്തറുപത്‌ കുടുംബം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും അമ്പലം നോക്കി നടത്താന്‍ ആർക്കും അത്ര താൽപര്യമില്ലായിരുന്നു. ഇടയ്ക്ക്‌ ആർക്കെങ്കിലും തോന്നുമ്പോൾ ഒരനക്കമൊക്കെ കുറച്ചുനാൾ ഉണ്ടാകും. പിന്നെ വീണ്ടും പഴയ പടി. എന്നിരുന്നാലും നോട്ടീസ്‌ അടിക്കുന്നത്‌ പോലെ ആണ്ടുതോറും നടത്തിവരാറുള്ള ഉത്സവം ഇത്തവണയും വിപുലമായ കാര്യപരിപാടികളോടെ കൊണ്ടാടുന്നു.
ഗോവിന്ദമാമയാണ്‌ ഇപ്പോൾ അമ്പലത്തിന്റെ പ്രമാണി. എല്ലാം നോക്കുന്നതും നടത്തുന്നതും അങ്ങേര്‌ തന്നെ. ഗോവിന്ദമാമ പറയുന്നതിനപ്പുറം മറുത്തൊരു വാക്ക്‌ മറ്റാർക്കുമില്ല.
നാലു കൊല്ലം മുൻപ്‌ അച്ഛൻ മരിക്കുന്നത്‌ വരെ എല്ലാം അച്ഛനായിരുന്നു. അന്നൊക്കെ ഉത്സവത്തിന്റെ എഴുന്നള്ളിപ്പിന്‌ വലിയ ജനക്കൂട്ടമെത്തും. ദൂരസ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുപോലും അച്ഛന്റെ ‘തുള്ളൽ’ കാണാൻ ആളുകളെത്തുക പതിവാണ്. ശേഖരന്റെ ദേഹത്ത്‌ ദേവി കേറിയാൽ അതൊരു കാഴ്ചയായിരുന്നെന്നാണ്‌ ഓരോരുത്തരും പറയാറ്‌. മെലിഞ്ഞ ശരീരത്തിൽ ചുവന്ന കച്ച ചുറ്റി അരമണിയും കിലുക്കി ഉയരത്തിൽ ചാടിത്തുള്ളി, തല വെട്ടിപ്പൊളിച്ച്‌ ചോരയൊലിപ്പിക്കുന്ന രൗദ്രഭാവത്തിനു മുന്നിൽ ഭയവും ഭക്തിയും നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരന്തരീക്ഷം പിറവി കൊള്ളും. ചെണ്ടമേളങ്ങളുടെ താളത്തിനൊപ്പം വാളിന്റെ രണ്ടറ്റത്തും ഓരോ കൈകൊണ്ട്‌ പിടിച്ച്‌ ഒരു കാലുയർത്തി ചുവടു വെച്ചുള്ള നൃത്തം കണ്ടുനിൽക്കാൻ ശേലാണ്‌.
കലിയിറങ്ങിയാൽ ചുറ്റമ്പലത്തിനകത്ത്‌ കയറ്റി തലയിലെ മുറിവുകളിൽ മഞ്ഞൾപ്പൊടി പൊത്തി വെച്ച്‌ പുറത്ത്‌ നിന്ന് പൂട്ടും. പിന്നീടവിടെ നിൽക്കാറില്ല. എന്തൊക്കെയായാലും അച്ഛനല്ലേ?
പിന്നെ കുറച്ചു നേരത്തേക്ക്‌ ഭ്രാന്ത്‌ കയറിയത്‌ പോലെയാണെന്ന് ചിലരൊക്കെ പറഞ്ഞു കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. അതുകൊണ്ടാണത്രെ ചുറ്റമ്പലത്തിനകത്താക്കി പൂട്ടുന്നത്‌. ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിക്കെന്തോ അതത്ര ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാനായില്ല.
തുടർന്ന് ജീവിക്കാനുള്ള വഴി മുട്ടിയതിനാലാണ്‌ തുള്ളലിൽ ആദ്യം അത്ര വിശ്വാസമില്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ഭാര്യയുടെ നിർബന്ധത്തിന്റെ പേരിലെന്ന വ്യാജേന ദേവിയുടെ കോമരമാകാൻ തയ്യാറായത്‌.
അവൾ പറയുന്നതിലും കാര്യമുണ്ട്‌. കാശുള്ളവരും ഇല്ലാത്തവരുമായി ഏറെ കുടുംബങ്ങൾ ചേർന്നതാണ്‌ തറവാട്‌. അവരെ മുഷിപ്പിക്കാതെ അവരുടെ ഇഷ്ടങ്ങൾക്കൊത്ത്‌ നീങ്ങിയാൽ ഒരു ഭാവി ഉണ്ടായിക്കൂടെന്നില്ല. വെളിച്ചപ്പാട്‌ എന്ന നിലയിൽ പേരുകേട്ട ശേഖരന്റെ മകൻ മറ്റുള്ളവരെ നിഷേധിച്ചാൽ ഒരു നിഷേധി എന്ന പേര്‌ സമ്പാദിക്കാം എന്നല്ലാതെ…..
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു കിഴക്കു വശത്ത്‌ പത്തിരുന്നൂറ്‌ അടി ദൂരെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനഭിമുഖമായാണ്‌ എഴുന്നുള്ളിപ്പിനു വേണ്ട സജ്ജീകരണങ്ങളുടെ ആരംഭം. കലശക്കുടവും അരമണിയും വാളും ചിലമ്പും ചുവന്ന കച്ചയും ചൂരൽ വടിയും ഒക്കെയായി ഏറ്റവും കിഴക്കെ അറ്റത്ത്‌ ഒരു നിര. അവർക്കു തൊട്ടുമുന്നിലായി സാവധാനത്തിൽ തുടങ്ങിയ കൊമ്പു വിളികളും ചെണ്ടമേളവും ആരംഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. നാലു മണിയായിട്ടും പൊള്ളുന്ന ചൂട്. ചെണ്ടമേളം മുറുകിയാൽ ദേവി നൃത്തത്തിൽ വരും.
എല്ലാ കണ്ണുകളും ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയിലേക്ക്‌.
കുളിച്ച്‌ കുറി തൊട്ട്‌ വെളുത്ത ഒറ്റമുണ്ടുടുത്ത്‌ കൈകെട്ടി അനങ്ങാതെ നിലപാണ്‌ ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടി. ഒരു ഭാവവ്യത്യാസവുമില്ല. കൂടി നിൽക്കുന്നവരിൽ പരിചയക്കാരെ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ ചമ്മൽ തോന്നാതിരുന്നില്ല. തന്നെ എല്ലാവരും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുന്നു എന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവ്‌ ആവേശമായി.
തുള്ളലിൽ ഒരു കന്നിക്കാരൻ എന്നതിനാൽ ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയുടെ തൊട്ടടുത്തായി പരിചയ സമ്പന്നരായ രണ്ട്‌ മദ്ധ്യവയസ്ക്കരും, അൽപം കരുത്തുള്ള മൂന്ന് ചെറുപ്പക്കാരും നിലയുറപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. അവരാണ്‌ പുതിയ കോമരത്തിന്റെ സുരക്ഷ നോക്കേണ്ടത്‌.
ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയിൽ കാര്യമായ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും കാണാതിരുന്നത്‌ എല്ലാവരിലും നിരാശ പരത്തി. കിഴക്കു നിന്നു പടിഞ്ഞാട്ട്‌ തിരിഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്ന ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടി നേരെ അമ്പലത്തിലേക്ക്‌ നോക്കി. അമ്പലത്തിന്റെ ഇരുട്ട്‌ നിറഞ്ഞ ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ കിഴക്കോട്ട്‌ തിരിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന ദേവി വിഗ്രഹം, ചുറ്റും കത്തുന്ന വിളക്കുകളുടെ പ്രകാശത്തിൽ നന്നായി ശോഭിച്ചു.
ദേഹമാസകലം ഒരു തരിപ്പ്‌ അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. പെട്ടെന്ന് കണ്ണുവെട്ടിച്ച്‌ ശ്രീകോവിലിനു പുറത്തായി മരത്തിന്റെ അഴികൾ കൊണ്ട്‌ നിർമ്മിച്ച ചുറ്റമ്പലത്തിന്‌ പുറത്തേക്ക്‌ നോക്കി. ചുറ്റും ചെറിയ മുല്ലത്തറകളിൽ വ്യത്യസ്ഥമായ മൂർത്തികൾ വേറെയും. മുത്തപ്പൻ, വിഷ്ണുമായ, കണ്ഠാകർണ്ണൻ, ഹനുമാൻ എന്നിങ്ങനെ തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ പേരെഴുതിവെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു ഓരോന്നിലും. വീണ്ടും ദേവിയിൽ തന്നെ കണ്ണുടക്കി.
കള്ള്‌ കുടിച്ചവനെപ്പോലെ ബാലൻസ്‌ തെറ്റുന്നതായി തോന്നി. നിന്നനിൽപിൽ നിന്ന് കാലുകൾ അനങ്ങാതെ, കൈകൾ അഴിക്കാതെ ശരീരത്തിന്റെ നടുഭാഗം പിന്നിലേക്ക്‌ വളഞ്ഞു പോയി. ബാലൻസ്‌ തെറ്റും എന്നാകുന്നതിനു മുൻപ്‌ സുരക്ഷക്കാർ പിന്നിലൂടെ പിടിച്ചു.
പരിചയസമ്പന്നർ നീളത്തിലുള്ള കച്ചയെടുത്ത്‌ തിടുക്കത്തിൽ ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയെ അണിയിച്ചു. എല്ലാം ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ നോക്കിയിരുന്ന ചെണ്ടമേളത്തിലെ മൂപ്പൻ കൊട്ട്‌ കൊഴുപ്പിച്ചു. അലറുന്ന കൊമ്പുവിളിക്കൊപ്പം ‘തുള്ളട്ടങ്ങനെ…തുള്ളട്ടങ്ങനെ…’ എന്ന താളത്തിലായി ചെണ്ടയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ശബ്ദം. അരമണി കൂടി കെട്ടിയതോടെ ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിക്ക്‌ ഓർമ്മ നഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നത്‌ പോലെ തോന്നി.
ശ്രീകോവിലിലെ വെളിച്ചവും ദേവി വിഗ്രഹവും ചെണ്ടയുടെ ഭ്രമാത്മകമായ താളവും മാത്രമായി ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയിൽ. കയ്യും കാലും അനങ്ങാതെ വെള്ളമുണ്ട് മാത്രം വിറക്കുന്നത്‌ ഇപ്പോൾ കാണാം. ഓർമ്മ പൂർണ്ണമായും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു.
പെട്ടെന്ന് ഇളകിമറിഞ്ഞ്‌ ഉയർന്ന് ചാടി. കിണ്ടിയിൽ പിടിച്ചിരുന്ന വെള്ളം വാങ്ങി തലയിലൂടെ കമഴ്ത്തി. നാക്കുനീട്ടി, പള്ളിവാളും ചിലമ്പും പിടിച്ചു വാങ്ങി. ഇത്രയും വലിയ നാക്കോ ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിക്ക്‌?
രണ്ടും മൂന്നും സുരക്ഷക്കാർ ഓരോ കയ്യിലും ബലമായി പിടിച്ചു. ഇടതു കയ്യിൽ വാളും, വലതു കയ്യിൽ ചിലമ്പുമായി വന്യമായ ആവേശത്തോടെ മുന്നോട്ട്‌ കുതിക്കുമ്പോൾ പിടി വിടാതെ സുരക്ഷക്കാരും ഒപ്പം പാഞ്ഞു. ഈ സമയം അടുത്ത്‌ കാണാനായി ഉള്ളിലേക്ക്‌ കയറിയ ജനങ്ങൾ തനിയെ പിൻവാങ്ങി.
ഒരു ഞൊടിയിടയിലൊരു കുതറൽ. അപ്പോഴത്തെ ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയുടെ ശക്തിക്കു മുന്നിൽ എല്ലാവരും നിഷ്പ്രഭരായി. ഇടതു കയ്യിലെ വാൾ നെറ്റിക്കു മുകളിലായി വെച്ച്‌ വലതു കയ്യിലെ ചിലമ്പു കൊണ്ട്‌ ആഞ്ഞടിക്കുന്നതിനു മുൻപ്‌ അവർ വീണ്ടും പിടിച്ചു. ചിലമ്പിന്റെ ആച്ചലിൽ അവരുടെ പിടുത്തത്തിന്‌ വേണ്ടത്ര ബലം കിട്ടിയില്ല.
വീതി കൂടിയ നെറ്റിയിലൂടെ ചോര ഇഴഞ്ഞിറങ്ങി. നെറ്റിയിൽ നിന്നിറങ്ങിയ ചോര മൂക്കിന്റെ രണ്ടു ഭാഗത്തു കൂടെ താഴോട്ട്‌ നീണ്ടു. നാക്ക്‌ പുത്തേക്ക്‌ നീട്ടി ചോര നക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോൾ ആ മുഖത്തെ ഭീഭൽസരൂപം ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയുടേതായിരുന്നില്ല.
ചോര നുണഞ്ഞ്‌ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ശാന്തമായി. കുതറലും ബഹളവും അവസാനിച്ചു. പിടിച്ചിരുന്നവരെല്ലാം പിടി വിട്ടു. സ്വതന്ത്രയായ ദേവി ചെണ്ടമേളക്കാർക്കു മുന്നിൽ പ്രത്യേക താളത്തിൽ നൃത്തം വെച്ചു. നൃത്തത്തിന്‌ വലിയ ഭംഗി ഒന്നും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും നെഞ്ചത്തെ കനം തൂങ്ങിയ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ മേലോട്ടും കീഴോട്ടും തുളുമ്പുന്നത്‌ കാണാൻ ചന്തമായിരുന്നു. ചുവന്ന കച്ചയും, ഇരു കയ്യിലെ വാളും ചിലമ്പും, മുഖത്തെ ഉണങ്ങിത്തുടങ്ങുന്ന ചോരയുടെ ചിത്രവും ഭീകരതയെക്കാൾ ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമാക്കി അന്തരീക്ഷം.
ചെണ്ടമേളത്തിനിടക്ക്‌ ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിക്ക്‌ ഓർമ്മകൾ തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടി. എന്നിട്ടും മേളത്തിനൊപ്പം നൃത്തം വെക്കാനെ കഴിഞ്ഞുള്ളു. തറയിൽ കാലുറപ്പിച്ച്‌ നിലക്കണമെന്ന് തോന്നി. പറ്റുന്നില്ല. നെറ്റിയിൽ വേദന തോന്നുന്നു. കയ്യും കാലും കഴക്കുന്നുണ്ടൊ? വ്യക്തമല്ലാത്ത പരിചയമുള്ള മുഖങ്ങൾ കാണുന്നു. തനിക്കെന്താണ്‌ സംഭവിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്‌…ഓർമ്മ വീണ്ടും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു.
തുള്ളിക്കൊണ്ട്‌ പാഞ്ഞു കയറിയത്‌ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനോടു ചേർന്ന് നിർമ്മിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള അലപം ഉയർന്ന ഒരു തറയിലേക്കാണ്‌. ജനങ്ങളോട്‌ ദേവിയുടെ വെളിപാട്‌ വിളിച്ചു പറയുന്നത്‌ ആ തറയിൽ നിന്നായിരുന്നു. സങ്കടങ്ങളും കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളും നിറഞ്ഞ പരാതികൾ ദേവിക്കു മുന്നിൽ കെട്ടഴിച്ച് ജനങ്ങൾ കാണിക്ക നൽകി ആശ്വാസപ്പെടുന്നത്‌ ‘ഞാനുണ്ടെന്ന’ദേവിയുടെ വാക്കുകളിൽ വിശ്വാസം കണ്ടെത്തിക്കൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
സാവധാനത്തിൽ തുള്ളിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയിൽ വീണ്ടും ഓർമ്മകൾ തിരിച്ചെത്തി. അൽപം കൃത്യമായ ഓർമ്മകൾ… താൻ ദേവിയായി പ്രത്യക്ഷ്പ്പെട്ടിരിക്കയാണെന്നും, ദേവി മക്കളോട്‌ കൽപന നടത്തുകയാണെന്നും വ്യക്തമായി. വിഷാദം നിറഞ്ഞ മുഖത്തോടെ അൽപം മാറി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഭാര്യ. കൂട്ടത്തിൽ തലയെടുപ്പോടെ നിൽക്കുന്ന പിശുക്കൻ രമണേട്ടനെ കണ്ടതും, ഇയാളെ ഒരു വേല വെച്ചെങ്കിലോ എന്നു മനസ്സിൽ തോന്നിയതും ഒന്നിച്ചായിരുന്നു. ഓർമ്മ അപ്രത്യക്ഷമായി.
അമ്പലത്തിന്റെ പുനരുദ്ധാരണത്തിന്‌ പതിനായിരത്തൊന്നു രൂപ നൽകണമെന്ന് ദേവി കൽപിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഒന്നും മിണ്ടാതെ തല കുലുക്കാനെ രമണേട്ടന്‌ ആയുള്ളു. വേറേയും നലഞ്ചു പേരോട്‌ അത്തരത്തിൽ കൽപിച്ചു. സാമ്പത്തികമായി അൽപം ഉയർന്നവരായിരുന്നതിനാൽ ദേവിയുടെ കൽപന മറ്റുള്ളവർക്ക്‌ ശരിയായി തോന്നി.

എഴുന്നുള്ളിപ്പ്‌ അവസാനിച്ചതോടെ അമ്പലപ്പറമ്പിലെ തിരക്ക്‌ കുറഞ്ഞു. ഭയത്തോടെ കുറച്ച്‌ കുട്ടികളും സഹതാപത്തോടെ യുവാക്കളും തെല്ലൊരഭിമാനത്തോടെ പ്രായമായവരും ചുറ്റമ്പലത്തിനകത്തേക്ക്‌ ആകാംക്ഷയോടെ നോക്കി നിൽക്കയാണ്‌. ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിയുടെ തലയിൽ മഞ്ഞൾപ്പൊടി പൊത്തിവെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ചുറ്റമ്പലം പുറത്ത്‌ നിന്ന് പൂട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു.
കാഴ്ചബംഗ്ലാവിനകത്തെ സിംഹമാണൊ താനെന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പോയി ശങ്കരങ്കുട്ടിക്ക്‌. തലക്കൊരു കനവും ദേഹമാസകലം വേദനയുമല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നും തോന്നിയിരുന്നില്ല. ഭ്രാന്ത്‌ പിടിച്ച അവസ്ഥയൊന്നും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.
അമ്പലമുറ്റത്ത്‌ ഒരു മേശയിട്ട്‌ ഗോവിന്ദമാമയും മറ്റ്‌ ചിലരും ഇരിപ്പുണ്ട്‌. സംഭാവന സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും പുസ്തകത്തിൽ വരവ്‌ വെക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നവർ പതിവിൽ കൂടുതൽ ഉത്സാഹഭരിതരായി കാണപ്പെട്ടു.

“സ്വൽപനേരങ്കൂടി കഴിഞ്ഞോട്ടെ…”
“ഇനിക്ക്‌ കൊഴപ്പൊന്നുംല്ലാ”
താഴ്‌ തുറന്ന് പുറത്ത്‌ കടന്നപ്പോൾ ചിലരൊക്കെ ഭവ്യതയോടെ എഴുന്നേറ്റു. നോക്കിനിന്നവരൊക്കെ അമ്പലമുറ്റത്തേക്ക്‌ അടുത്തു. ഗോവിന്ദമാമ ചീത്ത വിളിച്ചപ്പോൾ എല്ലാം തിരിച്ച്‌ പോയി.
