കേരള ചരിത്രത്തിലെ സുപ്രധാന സംഭവങ്ങളിലൊന്നായിരുന്നു കൊച്ചിയിൽ നടന്ന കായല്‍സമ്മേളനം.ഇതിന് നേതൃത്വം കൊടുത്തത് പണ്ഡിറ്റ് കറുപ്പനും,P. C. ചാഞ്ചനും.അധഃകൃതര്‍ അനുഭവിച്ച ദുരിതങ്ങള്‍ക്കെതിരേയുള്ള ശക്തമായ പ്രതിഷേധമായിരുന്നു 1913 ഫെബ്രുവരി 14 തിയ്യതിയിലെ കായല്‍സമ്മേളനം. എറണാകുളം നഗരത്തിലെവിടെയെങ്കിലും സ്ഥലം കണ്ടെത്താനായിരുന്നു സംഘാടകരുടെ തീരുമാനം. പക്ഷേ, സ്ഥലം നല്‍കാന്‍ ആരും തയ്യാറായില്ല. സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ഭൂമിയില്‍ തൊട്ടുകൂടാത്തവരെ യോഗം ചേരാന്‍ മഹാരാജാവ് അനുവദിച്ചിരുന്നുമില്ല. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ് വേദി കായലിലേക്കു മാറ്റാന്‍ സംഘാടകര്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചത്. ആലോചനകള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം അറബിക്കടലും കൊച്ചിക്കായലും ചേരുന്ന പ്രദേശം തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. മീന്‍പിടിത്തക്കാരുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ അനേകം കട്ടമരങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുമിച്ചു ചേര്‍ത്തുകെട്ടിയും വള്ളങ്ങള്‍ കൂട്ടിക്കെട്ടിയും നിരപ്പായ ഒരു പ്രതലം ഉണ്ടാക്കി. അതിനു മുകളില്‍ പലക വിരിച്ചതോടെ വേദി തയ്യാറായി. ചെറുചെറു വള്ളങ്ങളിലാണ് സമ്മേളനത്തില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തവരെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നത്. കൃഷ്ണാദി ആശാനെപ്പോലുള്ള നേതാക്കള്‍ കറുപ്പന്‍ മാഷോടൊപ്പം കൈമെയ് മറന്നു നിന്നപ്പോള്‍ സമ്മേളനം വന്‍വിജയമായി.
‘ലോകചരിത്രത്തില്‍ മറ്റൊരിടത്തും ഇതുപോലൊരു സംഭവം നടന്നതായി ഇന്നോളം കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ ഇടയായിട്ടില്ല’ എന്നാണ് ടി കെ സി വടുതല എഴുതിയത്. ഈ കായല്‍നടുവിലെ സമ്മേളനത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ഊര്‍ജം ഉള്‍ക്കൊണ്ടാണ് പിന്നീട് സമസ്ത കൊച്ചി പുലയമഹാസഭ രൂപം കൊണ്ടത്. എറണാകുളം നഗരത്തില്‍ താഴ്ന്ന ജാതിക്കാരെ പ്രവേശിപ്പിക്കാത്തതിനെതിരേ രണ്ടാമതൊരു ജലാശയസമരം കൂടി നടത്താന്‍ കറുപ്പന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഒരു കാര്‍ഷിക പ്രദര്‍ശനം ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യാന്‍ മഹാരാജാവ് വരുമെന്ന വിവരം മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ പണ്ഡിറ്റ് കറുപ്പനും കൂട്ടാളികളും വള്ളങ്ങളുമായി കായലിലെത്തി. രാജാവ് വന്നതോടെ പോരാളികള്‍ ചെണ്ടകൊട്ടി മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധക്ഷണിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു. പ്രക്ഷോഭകര്‍ വിചാരിച്ചതു പോലെത്തന്നെ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ നീങ്ങി. സമരത്തിനു നേതൃത്വം കൊടുത്ത കറുപ്പനെ രാജാവ് ആളയച്ചു വരുത്തി. ആവശ്യങ്ങളും പരാതികളും വിശദാംശങ്ങളോടെ എഴുതിത്തയ്യാറാക്കി തന്നെ കാണാന്‍ രാജാവ് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. പരാതി വായിച്ച രാജാവ് താഴ്ന്ന ജാതിക്കാര്‍ക്ക് പട്ടണത്തില്‍ പ്രവേശിക്കാമെന്ന വിളംബരം പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ചു. അതോടെ പ്രക്ഷോഭവും അവസാനിച്ചു.
ഇതൊരു നാടകമാണെന്നേ ഇന്നുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക്‌ തോന്നുകയുളളൂ. അതേ; അതൊരു നാടകം തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. പുലയരെ കൊച്ചി നഗരത്തിലൂടെ നടത്താന്‍ കറുപ്പന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ മെനഞ്ഞെടുത്തൊരു നാടകം. ‘കായല്‍ സമ്മേളനം’ ഒരു പ്രതിഷേധപ്രകടനമായിരുന്നു. അതും സാമൂഹ്യപരിഷ്കര്‍ത്താവായ കറുപ്പന്‍ മാസ്റ്ററുടെ ഭാവനയില്‍ വിരിഞ്ഞ ചുവന്നപൂവ്‌ ആയിരുന്നു
