എന്റെ സമപ്രായക്കാരായ ആൺ കുട്ടികളെല്ലാം സൈക്കിൾ ചവിട്ടാൻ പഠിക്കുന്ന കാലമായിരുന്നു അത്. (അന്ന് ഞങ്ങളുടെ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ പെൺകുട്ടികൾ സൈക്കിൾ ഓടിക്കുക സാധാരണമായിരുന്നില്ല. )ഒഴിവ് ദിനങ്ങളിൽ അടുത്തുള്ള സ്കൂൾ ഗ്രൗണ്ടിലാവും സൈക്കിൾ പഠനം.
കൂട്ടുകാരെല്ലാം സൈക്കിൾ പഠിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടപ്പോൾ സ്വാഭാവികമായും എന്നിലും അതൊരു മോഹമായി വളർന്നു.
അച്ഛനോട് പറയാനുള്ള പേടി കാരണം അമ്മയെ ചട്ടം കെട്ടി. പല രാത്രികളിലും അമായോട് ശണ്ഠകൂടി. വളരെ നാളത്തെ പിരിമുറുക്കത്തിന് ശേഷമാണ്, ഏഴാം ക്‌ളാസ്സുകാരനായ എന്നെ സൈക്കിൾ പഠിക്കാൻ അച്ഛൻ അനുവദിച്ചത്.
അന്ന് ഒരവധി ദിവസം ആയിരുന്നു. രാവിലെ തന്നെ കൂട്ടുകാരെല്ലാം സൈക്കിൾ ചവിട്ടാനുള്ള തയ്യാറെടുപ്പിലാണ്. രണ്ട് അരസൈക്കിളിനായി ഏഴെട്ട് പേർ. ചിലർ ഉന്തി കയറാൻ ശ്രെമിക്കുമ്പോഴേക്കും വീഴുന്നു. മറ്റു ചിലർ ചേര പുളയും പോലെ സൈക്കിൾ സീറ്റിലിരുന്ന് നടുവ് അങ്ങോട്ടുമിങ്ങോട്ടും പുളച്ച് ഒരുവിധം ചവിട്ടുന്നു.
കുറേ നേരം നോക്കി നിന്ന ഞാൻ ദുഃഖാകുലനായി വീട്ടിലേക്ക് തിരികെ ഓടി. അമ്മയോട് സൈക്കിൾ പഠിക്കണം എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. നടപ്പില്ല എന്നായപ്പോൾ കരച്ചിലായി. ആ സമയം കിഴക്കേ വഴിയിലൂടെ പോകുകയായിരുന്ന മദനണ്ണൻ അടുത്ത് വന്ന് എന്നോട് കരച്ചിലിന്റെ കാര്യം തിരക്കി. സൈക്കിൾ പഠിക്കണമെന്നും അച്ഛൻ അനുവദിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നും പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ, “മുത്ത് കരയണ്ട മാമൻ വഴിയുണ്ടാക്കാം”, എന്നായി മദനണ്ണൻ.
പശുവിന് കാടി കൊടുത്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന അച്ഛന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് ചെന്ന് അണ്ണൻ പറഞ്ഞു, “കൊച്ചാട്ട എന്തിനാ അവനെ കരയിക്കുന്നത് അതങ്ങ് സാധിച്ചുകൊടുത്തേക്ക് “.ഒടുവിൽ മദനണ്ണന്റെ നിർബന്ധത്തിന്‌ വഴങ്ങി അച്ഛൻ മൗനാനുവാദം നൽകുകയായിരുന്നു.
അങ്ങനെ മദനണ്ണൻ വാടകക്ക് എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടുവന്ന അരസൈക്കിളിൽ അണ്ണന്റെ ശിഷ്യത്വത്തിൽ ഞാനും സൈക്കിൾ പഠനം തുടങ്ങി. അന്ന് അമ്പത് പൈസ ആയിരുന്നു മണിക്കൂറിന് സൈക്കിൾ വാടക.
ആദ്യ ദിവസത്തെ രണ്ട് മണിക്കൂറിൽ സൈക്കിൾ ചവിട്ടാനാവാതെ നിരാശനായെങ്കിലും രണ്ടാം ദിവസത്തെ ഉദ്യമത്തിൽ നടുവ് നിവർത്തി സൈക്കിൾ ചവിട്ടാം എന്നായി.

അതുപോലെ മറ്റൊരാൾ യേശുദാസൻ സാറായിരുന്നു. സാറിന്റെ ഭാര്യ ഡെൽസി സാർ. രണ്ട് പേരും ദൂരെയേതോ സ്കൂളിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപകരായിരുന്നു. സാറിന് ജാവ ബൈക്ക് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അതിലായിരുന്നു രണ്ട് പേരും സ്കൂളിൽ പോയിരുന്നത്. എല്ലാ ദിവസവും രാവിലെ എട്ടുമണിയോടടുത്ത് ബൈക്ക് സ്റ്റാർട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്ന ശബ്ദം കേൾക്കുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ റോഡിലേക്കോടി സാറ് പോകുന്നതും കാത്ത് നിൽക്കുക എന്റെ പതിവായിരുന്നു.
പൊടി പറത്തി വരുന്ന ബൈക്കും അതോടിക്കുന്ന ദാസൻ സാറും പിന്നിലായിരിക്കുന്ന ഡെൽസി സാറും ഇന്നും എന്റെ മുന്നിൽ കൗതുകമായി പുഞ്ചിരി പൊഴിച്ച് നിൽക്കുന്നു.
ടി. കെ. സാറ് ജോലിക്ക് പോകുന്നത് സ്കൂട്ടറിൽ ആയതിനാൽ പകൽ സമയം സൈക്കിൾ വിശ്രമത്തിലായിരുന്നു. വളരെ നാളത്തെ ശ്രമഫലമായി ഒരു ദിവസം സൈക്കിൾ എടുത്തുകൊള്ളാൻ സാറ് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ സാമ്രാജ്യം കിട്ടിയ മനോഭാവം ആയിരുന്നു എനിക്ക്.
സൈക്കിളിൽ ആദ്യം അമ്മ വീട്ടിലേക്ക്. കായൽ വാരത്തായിരുന്നു അമ്മ വീട്. ഏഴിയാത്ത് വഴിയിലൂടെ ഒതളൻ കല്ലുകൾ പാകിയ റോഡിൽ സർവ്വ ശക്തിയുമെടുത്ത് സൈക്കിൾ ചവിട്ടി കൂട്ടാക്കിൽ മുക്കും കോനാഴത്ത് മുക്കും കടന്ന് കായൽ വാരത്തേക്ക്.
