കേരളമെന്ന് പറയുന്ന 38,863 km² മാത്രം വിസ്തൃതി ഉള്ള ഒരു കൊച്ചു പ്രദേശത്ത് ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പുഴകൾ ഒഴുകുന്നുണ്ട് എന്നുള്ളത് തന്നെ ഒരു മഹാത്ഭുതം ആയിട്ട് നാം കണക്കാക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. മറ്റൊരു പ്രത്യേകത കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഈ ചെറിയ വിസ്തൃതി കിടക്കുന്നത് പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിൽ നിന്നും കടൽ വരെ ഒരു എഴുപത്തിയഞ്ച് മുതൽ എൺപത് ഡിഗ്രി വരെ ചരിഞ്ഞാണ്.
ഈ ചരിഞ്ഞ പ്രദേശത്ത് കൂടിയാണ് ഇത്രയും പുഴകൾ ഒഴുകേണ്ടത്. നമ്മൾ സ്കൂളിൽ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് നാൽപ്പത്തിനാല് പുഴകൾ ഉണ്ടെന്നാണ് പക്ഷെ നാം മനസ്സിലാക്കേണ്ടത് ഓരോ പുഴകൾക്കും ഒരു പുഴ പോലെ തന്നെയുള്ള പ്രധാന കൈവഴിപുഴകളും ഉണ്ട്. ഉദാഹരണം വളപട്ടണം പുഴ. വളപട്ടണം പുഴ എന്ന് പറയുന്ന ബാവലി പുഴയാണ് അതിന്റെ മെയിൻ ബോഡി എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്. ഈ മെയിൻ ബോഡിയിലേക്ക് വന്നു ചേരുന്ന മറ്റ് ഒൻപത് പുഴകളുണ്ട്. ഈ ഒൻപത് പുഴകളും മെയിൻ ബോഡി പോലെ തന്നെ ദൈർഘ്യം ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും വെള്ളം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന വീതിയേറിയ പുഴകളാണ്. അവയിൽ മിക്കവാറും ഉത്ഭവിക്കുന്നത് പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ നിന്നുമാണ്. അങ്ങനെ നോക്കുമ്പോൾ കേരളത്തിലെ എല്ലാ പുഴകളും ചേർത്ത് നമ്മൾ പറയുകയാണെങ്കിൽ ആയിരത്തിൽ മേലെ പുഴകൾ കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഈ പറയുന്ന കർണാടകത്തിന്റെ മൂന്നിൽ ഒന്ന് മാത്രം വിസ്തൃതി ഉള്ള എഴുപതിയഞ്ച് - എൺപത് ഡിഗ്രി കിഴക്ക് നിന്ന് പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ചെരിഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ ഭൂപ്രദേശത്ത് കൂടി ഒഴുകുന്നുണ്ട്.
കേരളത്തിന്റെ വിസ്തൃതി പരിശോധിച്ചാൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ നിൽക്കുന്നത് പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടം എന്ന് പറയുന്ന മലനാടൻ പ്രദേശമാണ്. പിന്നീട് തീര പ്രദേശത്തിനും മലനാടൻ പ്രദേശത്തിനും ഇടയിൽ കിടക്കുന്ന ഇടനാടും അതിന് താഴെ ആയിട്ട് അൽപ്പം സമനിലത്ത് ആയി കിടക്കുന്ന തീര പ്രദേശവും. അപ്പോൾ കുത്തനെ പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഉത്ഭവിച്ചു ഒഴുകി വരുന്ന പുഴ അൽപ്പം മന്ദഗതിയിൽ ആവുന്നത് ഇടനാടിൽ വെച്ചിട്ടും പിന്നെ പൂർണമായിട്ടും അത് സമുദ്രത്തിന് സമാന്തരമായിട്ട് ഒഴുകുന്നത് തീരപ്രദേശത്തു വെച്ചിട്ടും ആണ്. അപ്പോൾ അങ്ങനെ വരുന്ന സമയത്ത് ഈ പുഴകളുടെ ഒഴുക്ക് അതിന്റെ വെള്ളം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന വ്യാപ്തം, വേഗത, പെയ്യുന്ന മഴ ഇതെല്ലാം തന്നെ പരസ്പരം ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് കിടക്കുന്നതാണ്. പുഴകളെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ നമ്മുടെ ശരീരത്തിലെ ധമനികളെ പോലെ പതുക്കെ പതുക്കെ ആയിട്ട് രക്തം ശരീരത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ ഭാഗത്തും എത്തിച്ചു ജീവനെ ത്രസിപ്പിച്ചു നിർത്തുന്നത് പോലെ ഓരോ വിരൽ തുമ്പും അനങ്ങുന്നത് പോലെ പുഴകൾ ഒഴുകി അതിന്റെ ചെറിയ ചെറിയ സിരകളിൽ ആയുള്ള കൈവഴികൾ എല്ലാ പ്രദേശത്തേക്കും വെള്ളം എത്തിച്ച് ഓരോ ഗ്രാമത്തെയും നനപ്പിച്ച് അവിടെ ജീവൻ നിലനിർത്തുന്നത് പുഴകളാണ്. ഈ പുഴകളുടെ ഒഴുക്ക് എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് നേരെയല്ല. ഉത്ഭവിച്ചിട്ട് നേരെയല്ല ഒഴുകുന്നത്. വളഞ്ഞു പുളഞ്ഞിട്ടാണ് പുഴകൾ ഒഴുകുന്നത്. ഉത്ഭവസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ഡയറക്ഷൻ നോക്കി കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ അത് പതിക്കുന്നത് അതിന്റെ നേർ രേഖയിൽ അല്ല. വ്യത്യസ്തമായ അതിന്റെ ഒരു വഴിയിൽ കൂടി സഞ്ചരിച്ചു കായലിലോ കടലിലോ അഴിമുഖങ്ങളിലോ പോയി ചേരുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ഈ പുഴകൾ എങ്ങനെയാണ് അതിന്റെ ഗതികൾ കണ്ടെത്തുന്നത്, അതിന് മുൻപ് മഴയുടെ അളവ് പറയേണ്ടതുണ്ട്.
കേരളത്തിൽ പെയ്യുന്ന മഴയുടെ അളവ്, അതായത് രണ്ട് കാലവർഷങ്ങളിൽ കൂടി തെക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറ് കാലവർഷവും വഴക്ക് കിഴക്കൻ കാല വർഷങ്ങളിൽ കൂടി കേരളത്തിന് ലഭിക്കുന്ന മഴ. ഈ മഴയുടെ അളവ് വ്യത്യസ്തപ്പെട്ട് കിടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പല വർഷങ്ങളിലും അവ വ്യത്യസ്തപ്പെട്ട് കിടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. എങ്കിൽ കൂടി കേരളത്തിൽ ഒരു മൂവായിരത്തി അഞ്ഞൂറ് മില്ലിമീറ്റർ മഴ ലഭിക്കു ന്നുണ്ട്. ചില വർഷങ്ങളിൽ അത് മൂവായിരത്തിൽ താഴേക്ക് പോവാറുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ചില വർഷങ്ങളിൽ അത് മൂവായിരത്തി എണ്ണൂറിനു മേലേക്കും പോവാറുണ്ട്. അപ്പോൾ ഒരു മൂവായിരത്തി അഞ്ഞൂറ് മില്ലി മീറ്റർ മഴ കേരളത്തിന് ലഭിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇത്രയും മഴ പെയ്തു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഈ പറയുന്ന ചെരിഞ്ഞ ഭൂപ്രദേശത്ത് അതിനെ സംഭരിച്ചു വെക്കണമെങ്കിലും പതുക്കെ ആക്കണമെങ്കിലും പുഴയിൽ കൂടി ഒഴുക്കണമെങ്കിലും അടുത്ത വർഷത്തേക്ക് വരെ ആ ഉറവകൾ നീണ്ട് നിൽക്കണമെങ്കിലും പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ കാട് വേണം. കാട് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ കുറെ മരങ്ങൾ നിൽക്കുന്നതല്ല, ചോലവനങ്ങളും പുൽമേട്കളും നിത്യരഹിത വനങ്ങളും അർദ്ധനിത്യരഹിത വനങ്ങളും ആർദ്ര ഇലപൊഴിയും കാടുകളും ഒക്കെ ചേർന്ന് കിടക്കുന്ന മഴക്കാട് എന്ന് നമ്മൾ വിളിക്കുന്ന റെയിൻ ഫോറെസ്റ്റ് വേണം. റെയിൻ ഫോറെസ്റ്റ് ൽ സംഭരിച്ചു വെക്കുന്ന മഴയാണ് പുഴയായിട്ട് ഒഴുകുന്നത്. പക്ഷെ ഇന്ന് നമ്മുടെ മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ പുഴകളും ജീവച്ഛവം ആയിട്ട് മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. മഴകാലത്ത് വെള്ളം ഒഴുകുന്ന ചാലുകൾ ആയിട്ട് മാറി കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുകയാണ് പുഴകൾ. അങ്ങനെ സംഭവിക്കുമ്പോൾ മൊത്തം ഒരു നാടിന്റെ മൂന്നരക്കോടി മനുഷ്യരുടെ ജീവതാ ളത്തെയും പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിന് ജൈവ സ്പീഷീസുകളെയും ജന്തു വർഗ്ഗങ്ങളെയും അത് നേരിട്ട് ബാധിക്കുന്നു. വെള്ളം സംഭരിക്കാൻ പറ്റാതെ മഴക്കാലത്ത് പെയ്യുന്ന മഴവെള്ളം അങ്ങനെ തന്നെ കുത്തിയൊലിച്ചു പുഴയിലേക്ക് എത്തി കടലിലേക്ക് ഒഴുക്കി കൊണ്ട് പോവുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ പോവുന്ന സമയത്ത് നമ്മുടെ വേനൽ കാലത്തെ, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മഴയില്ലാത്ത സമയങ്ങളിലെ കൃഷിയെ അത് സാരമായി ബാധിക്കുന്നു. കുടിവെള്ളത്തെ സാരമായി ബാധിക്കുന്നു. പശു വളർത്തലിനെ പാൽ വ്യവസായത്തെ, അങ്ങനെയുള്ള കൃഷിയുമായി നേരിട്ടും അല്ലാതെയും ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് കിടക്കുന്ന ഒരുപാട് വ്യവസായങ്ങളെ അത് പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തെ പുഴ ഉത്ഭവിക്കുന്നതിലെ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലെ നാണ്യവിളകളെ ആയാലും തീര പ്രദേശത്തെ ധാന്യവിളകളെ ആയാലും ഇതിനെ രണ്ടിനെയും പുഴയുടെ വെള്ളത്തിന്റെ ഒഴുക്ക്, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അതിന്റെ വെള്ളത്തിന്റെ ലഭ്യതക്ക് അനുസരിച്ച് അത് മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. വിളവ് കിട്ടാതെ കർഷകർക്ക് ദുരിതം പേറേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. എന്ത് കൊണ്ടാണ് ഇങ്ങനെ സംഭവിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിലെ കാടും പുഴയും തമ്മിൽ വലിയ ബന്ധമുണ്ട് പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ സംഭരിച്ചു വെക്കുന്ന വെള്ളമാണ് പുഴയിൽ കൂടെ അടുത്ത വർഷം വരെ വേനൽക്കാലം മുഴുവൻ ഒഴുകേണ്ടത് എന്നുള്ളതാണ്.
പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ നാം നടത്തികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഇടപെടലുകൾ, അവിടെ നാം കാടില്ലാതെ ആക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു, അവിടെ പുൽമേടുകൾ ഇല്ലാതാക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. അനിയന്ത്രിതമായിട്ടുള്ള മലയിടിച്ചൽ വികസനങ്ങൾ ക്വാറി വൽക്കരണം അത് പോലെ പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ എന്തൊക്കെയാണ് നാം ചെയ്ത് കൂടാത്തത് അതെല്ലാം നമ്മുടെ ചെറിയ കേരളത്തിന്റെ പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ നാം നടത്തികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അറുനൂറു കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൈർഘ്യം ഉള്ള ഈ പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ അവിടെയുള്ള ജൈവ വ്യവസ്ഥയും വളരെ സുപ്രധാനം ആയിട്ടുള്ളതാണ് പക്ഷെ അവിടെ നമ്മൾ നടത്തി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഇടപെടലുകൾ വളരെ ഗുരുതരമായി ബാധിക്കുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പുഴ ആയിട്ടുള്ള പെരിയാറും പിന്നെ ഭാരത പുഴയും ചാലിയാറും അടക്കമുള്ള എല്ലാ പുഴകൾക്കും ജീവൻ നിലച്ചു പോവുന്നു മഴ കഴിയുന്നതോട് കൂടി. അപ്പോൾ മഴ സംഭരിച്ചു വെച്ചാൽ മാത്രമേ പുഴക്ക് ജീവൻ ഉണ്ടാവുകയുള്ളു എന്ന് നമ്മുക്ക് തിരിച്ചറിയേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. പുഴയിലെ വെള്ളം മാത്രമല്ല പുഴ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് ഒരു ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥയാണ് പുഴയിലെ വെള്ളത്തെ ആശ്രയിച്ചിട്ട് ഒരുപാട് ജീവജാലങ്ങൾ കഴിയുന്നു. പുഴയൊരു ജൈവനാളികൂടിയാണ്. പുഴയിൽ കൂടി ജീവജാലങ്ങൾക്ക് സഞ്ചരിച്ചിട്ട് മറ്റൊരു ദിക്കിൽ എത്തേണ്ട ഒരു പൊക്കിൾകൊടി കൂടി ആയിട്ട് പുഴ മാറുന്നുണ്ട്. അതായത് കടലിൽ ഉപ്പ് വെള്ളത്തിൽ നിന്നും കയറി വരുന്ന ജീവജാലങ്ങൾക്ക് മത്സ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് പുഴയിൽ കൂടി കിഴക്കൊട്ട് സഞ്ചരിച്ചു ഏതെങ്കിലും ശുദ്ധ ജലമുള്ള തടാകങ്ങളിലോ പാറപ്പുറങ്ങളിലോ കുളങ്ങളിലോ ഏതെങ്കിലും നീർച്ചാലുകളിലോ കെട്ടിക്കിടക്കുന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലോ ചെന്ന് മുട്ടയിട്ട് പെരുകി തിരിച്ചു പോകേണ്ട ഒരു വലിയ ജൈവ വ്യവസ്ഥ നില നിർത്തേണ്ടത് പുഴയുടെ ഈ പൊക്കിൾകൊടി എന്ന് പറയുന്ന ഒരു നാളിയിൽ കൂടിയാണ്. അപ്പോൾ പുഴ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് വെള്ളം ഒഴുകാനുള്ള ഒരു സ്ഥലം മാത്രമല്ല. അതൊരു ജൈവ ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥ കൂടിയാണ്.
പുഴയ്ക്ക് രണ്ട് ചിറകുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഒരു ശരീരം പോലെ തന്നെ ഇരുവശങ്ങളിലേക്കും നമ്മൾ കൈ നിവർത്തി വെച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ എത്ര ദൂരം എത്തുമോ ആ രണ്ട് കൈകളും ആണ് ഇരുവശങ്ങളിലും അതിന്റെ ചിറകുകൾ. പിന്നെ നമ്മുടെ ശരീരം എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് അതിന്റെ മെയിൻ ബോഡി യും. ഈ രണ്ട് ചിറകുകളും എത്ര വീതിയിൽ ഉണ്ടോ അത് മുഴുവനും പുഴയാണ്. ആ പുഴകൾ ആ ചിറകുകളുടെ വീതിയിൽ എന്തൊക്കെ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നുവോ അവിടെയുള്ള മരങ്ങൾ, ആ മരത്തിൽ കൂട് കൂട്ടുന്ന പക്ഷികൾ, ആ മരത്തിന് താഴെയുള്ള ചതുപ്പുകൾ, അവിടെ ജീവിക്കുന്ന ജലജീവികൾ. ആ പുഴയും ജലജീവികളും പക്ഷികളും പൂമ്പാറ്റകളും മത്സ്യങ്ങളും ഞണ്ടുകളും പുഴയെ ആശ്രയിച്ചു കഴിയുന്ന കരയിലെയും വെള്ളത്തിലേയും ജീവജാലങ്ങൾ അത് സസ്തനികൾ ആയിക്കോട്ടെ, ഉരഗങ്ങൾ ആയിക്കോട്ടെ, പക്ഷികൾ ആയിക്കോട്ടെ വേറെയുള്ള മത്സ്യങ്ങൾ അടക്കമുള്ള ജീവജാലങ്ങൾ ആയിക്കോട്ടെ. ഇതെല്ലാം ചേർന്ന വലിയൊരു ഇക്കോ സിസ്റ്റത്തെയാണ് പുഴ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് . അതൊരു ജൈവ വ്യൂഹമാണ്. ജൈവ വ്യൂഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രവാഹത്തെയാണ് പുഴ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്. അതിൽ വെള്ളമുണ്ട്, അതിൽ ജീവനുണ്ട് അതിൽ ജീവനില്ലാത്തവയുണ്ട് അതിൽ ആകാശമുണ്ട് അതിൽ ഓക്സിജൻ ഉണ്ട് അതിൽ നൈട്രജൻ ഉണ്ട്, സകലമാന ജൈവ അജൈവ ഘടകങ്ങളെയും ചേർത്ത് കോർത്തിണക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് പ്രവഹിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വലിയ പ്രവാഹത്തെയാണ് ഒരു ഒഴുക്കിനെയാണ്, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒരു ജൈവ മണ്ഡലത്തെയാണ് പുഴ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്. ആ തലത്തിൽ നമ്മൾ ഒരിക്കലും പുഴയെ കാണാറില്ല, നമ്മളെ ആരും അങ്ങനെ പഠിപ്പിക്കാറില്ല. പുഴ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് പാലം കെട്ടാൻ ഉള്ള ഒരു സാധനമായിട്ടും, പുഴ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് മീൻ പിടിക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു സാധനം ആയിട്ടും ആണ് നമ്മുടെ പാഠപുസ്തകങ്ങളിൽ പ്രധാനമായിട്ടും പറയുന്നത്. അതിന്റെ ജൈവ വ്യവസ്ഥകളെ കുറിച്ച് അധികമൊന്നും പറയാറില്ല. ഇപ്പോൾ പുഴ നേരിടുന്നത് പുഴയുടെ ഉത്ഭവ സ്ഥാനം മുതൽ പതനം വരെ നടത്തുന്ന ഗുരുതമായിട്ടുള്ള കയ്യേറ്റമാണ്. ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞ രണ്ട് ചിറകുകളും മുറിച്ചു കളഞ്ഞിട്ട് ഒരു മെയിൻ ബോഡി എന്ന് പറയുന്ന വെള്ളം ഒഴുകി പോവാനുള്ള സാധനം ആയിട്ട് പുഴയെ മാറ്റുകയാണ് ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. അപ്പോൾ പുഴ അതിന്റെ പകുതി ജീവൻ ഇല്ലാതാക്കിയാണ് ഒരു മഴക്കാല നീർചാലായിട്ട് മാത്രം അത് മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. അതിഭീകരമാണ് പുഴയുടെ കരയിൽ നടക്കുന്ന കയ്യേറ്റങ്ങൾ. ഈ കയ്യേറ്റങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും തന്നെ ഒഴുപ്പിക്കാറില്ല. അത് കൊണ്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞ മഴക്കാലത്ത് 2018 ലെ വെള്ളപ്പൊക്ക കാലത്ത് പുഴ മുഴുവനും കയ്യേറ്റങ്ങളേയും തുടച്ചു നീക്കി കൊണ്ട് അധികൃതരുടെ കണ്ണ് തുറപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ എന്നിട്ട് പോലും, അത് വേണ്ടത്ര ആരും ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടില്ല പുഴക്ക് ഇത്ര വീതി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നും അത് ഇതാണ് പുഴ കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നത് എന്നും അത് കൊണ്ട് അത് തിരിച്ചു പിടിക്കണമെന്നും ഉള്ള ബോധ്യം നമ്മുക്ക് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല. അത് കൊണ്ട് പുഴ കയ്യേറി ഇരിക്കുന്ന ലോബികൾ അങ്ങനെ തന്നെ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ പുഴയുടെ നാശം എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് കേരളത്തിന്റെ നാശമാണ്.

പിന്നീട് കടല് വന്നിട്ട് പുഴയിൽ നിന്നും വെള്ളം ശേഖരിക്കുന്ന അവസ്ഥയാണ്. വേലിയേറ്റ വേലിയിറക്ക സമയത്ത് ലോകത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ശുദ്ധജലം കടലിൽ എത്തിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പുഴയാണ് ആമസോൺ. ആമസോണിന്റെ അളവ് എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് വളരെ വലുതാണ്
അത്രയൊന്നും നമ്മുക്കില്ല എന്നാലും കടലിലേക്ക് വെള്ളം തള്ളി, കടൽ വെള്ളത്തെ പിന്നോട്ട് തള്ളേണ്ട ആമസോൺ നദികൾ ഒക്കെ ചെയ്യുന്നത് പോലെ കടൽ വെള്ളത്തെ പിന്നോട്ട് തള്ളിയിട്ട് ശുദ്ധജലം അതിൽ ചേരേണ്ട അവസ്ഥ ഉള്ള പുഴകൾ നമ്മുക്കില്ല. കടലിന്റെ വേലിയേറ്റത്തെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കാൻ പറ്റുന്ന ഒന്നോ രണ്ടോ പുഴകൾ മാത്രമേ നമ്മുക്കുള്ളു. അപ്പൊ എന്താണെന്ന് വെച്ചാൽ വെള്ളം അവിടുന്ന് കടൽ വന്നു സ്വീകരിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ആ കടൽ വേലിയേറ്റത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിവന്നിട്ട് തീര പ്രദേശത്തെക്ക് തള്ളി കയറുമ്പോൾ തിരിച്ചു പോവുന്ന സമയത്ത് പുഴയും കൊണ്ടാണ് കടലിലേക്ക് പോവുന്നത്. അപ്പോ അങ്ങനെയുള്ള ഒരു വലിയ ജൈവ പ്രക്രിയ, ഒരു വലിയ ബന്ധം പുഴയും കടലും കാടും പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടവും എല്ലാം തമ്മിൽ ഉണ്ട്. അപ്പോൾ ഇതിന്റെയൊരു ശരിയായ ചിത്രത്തെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനമായിരിക്കണം നമ്മുക്ക് ഭാവിയിൽ ഉണ്ടാകേണ്ടത്. കുട്ടികളെ പഠിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടത്. അപ്പോൾ അതിന് വേണ്ടിയിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു കരിക്കുലം(curriculum) ഉണ്ടാക്കിയെടുക്കേണ്ടത് ഉണ്ട് പുഴയെ കുറിച്ച്, നമ്മുടെ പ്രകൃതിയെ കുറിച്ചും പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടത്തെ കുറിച്ചും പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ഇക്കോളജി യേ കുറിച്ചും. എന്താണ് ഇക്കോളജി എന്ന് വെറുതെ പാഠപുസ്തകത്തിൽ പറഞ്ഞാൽ പോരാ, അതിന്റെ യഥാർത്ഥ വഴിയിൽ കൂടി സഞ്ചരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് നാം ഇത് കുട്ടികൾക്ക് പറഞ്ഞ് കൊടുക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഈ ചെറിയ ഇട്ടാവട്ടത്തുള്ള ഈ ഭൂമി വൈകാതെ തന്നെ ഒരു മരുസമാനം ആയിട്ടുള്ള പ്രദേശമായിട്ട് മാറും എന്നുള്ള കാര്യത്തിൽ സംശയമില്ല എന്നുള്ളതാണ് ഇതിനെ കുറിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞു വെക്കുന്നത്.
