ആദ്യ ഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഒക്ടോബർ 28 ന് 71 സീറ്റുകളിലേക്ക് വോട്ടിംഗ് നടത്തും.നവംബർ 3 ന് 94 സീറ്റുകൾക്ക് രണ്ടാം ഘട്ടം . നവംബർ 7 ന് 78 സീറ്റുകളിൽ മൂന്നാമത്തേത് ഫലം നവംബർ 10 ന് പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കും. ബീഹാറിലെ പ്രധാന രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാർട്ടികൾ ജനതാദൾ (യുണൈറ്റഡ്),
ഭാരതീയ ജനതാ പാർട്ടി (ബിജെപി),
രാഷ്ട്രീയ ജനതാദൾ (ആർജെഡി) എന്നിവയാണ്.
90 കളിൽ തർക്കമില്ലാത്ത എതിരാളിയായിരുന്ന ആർജെഡി സഖ്യകക്ഷിയായ കോൺഗ്രസ് നാലാം സ്ഥാനത്താണ്. സമാജ്‌വാദി പാർട്ടി, നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസ് പാർട്ടി (എൻ‌സി‌പി), സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ നിലവിലുള്ള ദേശീയ ഡെമോക്രാറ്റിക് അലയൻസ് (എൻഡിഎ) സർക്കാർ ജെഡി (യു) നേതാവ് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി നിതീഷ് കുമാറിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ്.
കഴിഞ്ഞ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ ലോക് ജനശക്തി പാർട്ടി (എൽജെപി), രാഷ്ട്രീയ ലോക്സംഘ പാർട്ടി (ആർ‌എൽ‌ഡി‌പി), ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി അവാം മോർച്ച (എച്ച്എഎം) എന്നീ മൂന്ന് ചെറിയ സഖ്യകക്ഷികൾക്കൊപ്പം ബിജെപിയാണ് സഖ്യത്തിന് നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയത്. നിലവിലെ പ്രതിപക്ഷമായ മഹാഗത്ബന്ദന്റെ ഭാഗമായി 2016 ലെ നിയമസഭാ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ ജെഡിയു മത്സരിച്ചു. 2016 ൽ മഹാഗത്ബന്ദൻ സർക്കാർ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ വിജയിച്ച് സർക്കാർ രൂപീകരിച്ചു.
എന്നിരുന്നാലും, 2017 ൽ ജെഡി (യു) സഖ്യം മാറ്റി മഹാഗത്ബന്ദൻ സർക്കാർ വീഴുകയും എൻഡിഎ അധികാരത്തിൽ വരികയും ചെയ്തു. 2018 ൽ രണ്ട് പങ്കാളികളായ ആർ‌എൽ‌എസ്‌പിയും എച്ച്‌എമ്മും സഖ്യം വിട്ടു. 2020 ൽ നിയമസഭാ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിന് മുന്നോടിയായി എച്ച്എഎം വീണ്ടും എൻ‌ഡി‌എയിൽ ചേർന്നപ്പോൾ, എൻ‌ഡി‌എയിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്തുകടന്ന് ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് മത്സരിക്കാൻ എൽജെപി തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ബിജെപി, ജെഡി (യു), ബീഹാർ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിനുള്ള എൻ‌ഡി‌എയുടെ നാലാമത്തെ അംഗം വികാസ്ഷീൽ ഇൻസാൻ പാർട്ടിയാണ്. 2020 ബിഹാർ മത്സരം ജെഡിയു നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള എൻ‌ഡി‌എയും മഹാഗത്ബന്ദനും തമ്മിൽ വിഭജിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് പറയുന്നത് സുരക്ഷിതമാണ്.
എൻ‌ഡി‌എയെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിന് മുമ്പ് രൂപീകരിച്ച ബീഹാറിലെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാർട്ടികളുടെ കൂട്ടായ്മയാണ് മഹാഗത്ബന്ധൻ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഗ്രാൻഡ് അലയൻസ്. കോൺഗ്രസ്, ആർജെഡി, കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് പാർട്ടി ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ (എം-എൽ), കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് പാർട്ടി ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ (സിപിഐ), കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് പാർട്ടി ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ (മാർകിസ്റ്റ്) എന്നിവരടങ്ങുന്നതാണ് മഹാഗത്ബന്ധൻ. തിരികെ 2016 ൽ അവർ എതിർത്തു ജനതാദൾ (യു) എൻഡിഎ ചേരുന്നത് വരെ എൻഡിഎ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ച ശേഷം മഹഗഥ്ബംധന് ചേർന്നു. അതേസമയം ജാർഖണ്ഡ് മുക്തി മോർച്ച തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് മത്സരിക്കുമെങ്കിലും സഖ്യകക്ഷിയാണ്. ഇന്ത്യൻ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് കമ്മീഷൻ പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ച ആവശ്യമായ മാർഗ്ഗനിർദ്ദേശങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി കോവിഡ് -19 പകർച്ചവ്യാധികൾക്കിടയിലാണ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് നടക്കുക. തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ വെർച്വൽ, ഫിസിക്കൽ കാമ്പെയ്‌നുകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടും. റാലികളിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ പരിമിതമായ ആളുകളെ സംബന്ധിച്ച മാർഗ്ഗനിർദ്ദേശങ്ങളും അധികൃതർ പാസാക്കും. കോവിഡ് -19 കാരണം, പോളിംഗ് സമയം ഒരു മണിക്കൂർ വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കും, നക്സലൈറ്റ്-മാവോയിസ്റ്റ് കലാപബാധിത പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ ഒഴികെ രാവിലെ 7 മുതൽ വൈകുന്നേരം 6 വരെ ആയിരിക്കും. തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്
