കേരളത്തിലെ വയനാട്ടിൽ പോലീസ് പിടിയിൽ വെടിവച്ചു കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട നക്സലൈറ്റ് നേതാവാണ് അരീക്കൽ വർഗ്ഗീസ് എന്ന എ. വർഗ്ഗീസ്.
മുൻപ് സി.പി.ഐ.എം പ്രവർത്തകനായിരുന്ന വർഗ്ഗീസ്, വയനാട്ടിലെ ആദിവസികൾക്കിടയിലെ പ്രവർത്തന കാലത്ത് നക്സലൈറ്റ് പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിലേക്ക് മാറുകയായിരുന്നു.
ആദിവാസികളുടെ വയനാട്ടിലെ സ്ഥിതി ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം ലഭിച്ചതിനുശേഷവും ശോചനീയമായിരുന്നു. വള്ളിയൂർകാവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എല്ലാ വർഷവും അടിമവ്യാപാരം നടന്നിരുന്നു. വർഗ്ഗീസിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിലൂടെ അടിമപ്പണി വയനാട്ടിൽ പൂർണ്ണമായും നിർത്തലാക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
വർഗ്ഗീസ് ആദിവാസികൾക്ക് നൽകിയ പഠന ക്ലാസുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ചോമൻ മൂപ്പൻ, എം.പി. കാളൻ തുടങ്ങിയ ആദിവാസി നേതാക്കൾ വായിക്കുവാനും എഴുതുവാനും പഠിച്ചത്.
നക്സൽ ആക്ഷനുകളിലൂടെ വർഗ്ഗീസും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും വയനാട് ത്രിശ്ശില്ലേരിയിലെ വസുദേവ അഡിഗ, ചേക്കു എന്നീ സ്ഥലം ഉടമകളെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തി. വർഗ്ഗീസിന്റെ അക്രമ മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങൾ വയനാട്ടിലെ ആദിവാസികളല്ലാത്ത ജനങ്ങളുടെയിടയിൽ ഒരു തീവ്രവാദി എന്ന പ്രതിച്ഛായ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു.
വയനാട്ടിലെ തിരുനെല്ലിക്കാടുകളിൽ വെച്ചായിരുന്നു വർഗ്ഗീസിന്റെ അന്ത്യം. പോലീസുമായുള്ള ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലിൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു എന്നായിരുന്നു ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷ്യം. എന്നാൽ വയനാട്ടിൽ തിരുനെല്ലിയിലെ ഒരു കുടിലിൽ നിന്ന് രാവിലെ പിടികൂടിയ വർഗ്ഗീസിനെ, അന്നത്തെ ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി എസ്.പി ആയ എ. ലക്ഷ്മണ, ഡി.ഐ.ജി ആയ പി. വിജയൻ എന്നിവരുടെ നിർദ്ദേശ പ്രകാരം വൈകിട്ട്, താൻ തന്നെ നേരിട്ട് വെടിവെച്ച് കൊല്ലുകയായിരുന്നു എന്ന് രാമചന്ദ്രൻ നായർ എന്ന പോലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥൻ 1998-ൽ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി. ഈ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തൽ മൂലം കുറ്റക്കാർക്കെതിരെ നിയമനടപടികൾ കൈക്കൊള്ളുകയും ചെയ്തു
