അമിതാധികാര നിയമങ്ങളുടെ ചരിത്രവഴികള്‍ അതാണ് ഓര്‍മ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഇത് തീര്‍ത്തും ജനാധിപത്യ വിരുദ്ധവും, അഭിപ്രായ സ്വാതന്ത്യത്തിന്മേലുള്ള കൈകടത്തലുമാണെന്നു ഞങ്ങള്‍ കരുതുന്നു. പോലീസ് ആക്ടില്‍ പുതുതായി 118-A എന്ന വകുപ്പ് കൂട്ടി ചേര്‍ക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ സൈബര്‍ കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങളെ ഫലപ്രദമായി നേരിടാന്‍ പൊലീസിനു കഴിയുമെന്ന ന്യായമാണ് ഭേദഗതിയെ നീതികരിക്കുന്നതിനായി മുന്നോട്ടു വച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.
പൊലീസിന് അമിതാധികാരം പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഇത്തരം ഭേദഗതികള്‍ ദുരപിഷ്ടവും ദൂരവ്യാപകമായ പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയാക്കുന്നതുമാണ്. വ്യക്തിയുടെ സല്‍പ്പേരിനും, കീര്‍ത്തിക്കും അപകീര്‍ത്തിയും, അപമാനവു, ഭീഷണിയും, അപകടത്തിനും ഇടയാക്കുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ള ഉള്ളടക്കം വിവിധ തരത്തിലുള്ള സാമൂഹ്യമാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ വഴി നിര്‍മിക്കുകയും, വിനിമയം ചെയ്യുകയും, പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളെ കുറ്റകരമാക്കുന്നതാണ് നിര്‍ദിഷ്ട ഭേദഗതി.
അങ്ങനെയുളള പ്രവര്‍ത്തികള്‍ ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ പെട്ടാല്‍ പൊലീസിനു സ്വമേധയാ കേസ്സ് എടുക്കുന്നതിന് നിയമപരമായ അധികാരം നല്‍കുന്നതാണ് ഈ ഭേദഗതി ഇതിനകം തന്നെ വ്യാപകമായ വിമര്‍ശനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഇടയാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കുറ്റം തെളിഞ്ഞാല്‍ 3-കൊല്ലം തടവോ, അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ 10,000 രൂപ പിഴയോ അതുമല്ലെങ്കില്‍ തടവും, പിഴയും ചേര്‍ന്ന ശിക്ഷയാണ് ലഭിക്കുക. നിലവിലുളള നിയമങ്ങള്‍ പ്രകാരം തന്നെ മേല്‍പ്പറഞ്ഞ നിലയിലുള്ള കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഉത്തരവാദികളായവര്‍ക്ക് എതിരെ നിയമപരമായ നടപടികള്‍ സ്വീകരിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്.
