ആയംപാറ കാട്ടിന്റെ നട്ക്ക് കുന്നിന്റെ മുകളില് കിട്ടന്റെ കൊട്ടാരത്തിന് കുറ്റീയിട്ടു. കൂർമ്മപൃഷ്ഠയിലുള്ള സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ പ്രൗഢി ചമ്പാരൻ കാടും കടന്ന് ചിന്നാടന്റെ അറേലുമെത്തി.
“ആയംപാറ കിട്ടന്റെ കൊട്ടാരത്തിന് കുറ്റീട്ടു,ആയംപാറ കാട്ട്ലേക്ക് പോണം.” ചിന്നാടന് ഉൾവളിയുണ്ടായി. ചിന്നാടൻ പണി സാധനങ്ങൾ ചാക്കില് കയറ്റി. ഒലംമ്പ,കത്തി,മഴു,ലവല്,കോല് ചരട്,മൂലമട്ടം……… ചിന്നാടൻ അച്ഛന്റെ മുഖത്ത് നോക്കി.പാറമേലപ്പനെ ധ്യാനിച്ചു.അപ്പൊ ചിന്നാടന്റെ കൈ വിറക്കും, ഉറഞ്ഞു തുള്ളുന്ന ചാമുണ്ഡിക്ക് സമം ഉത്തേജനമുണ്ടാകും,വെള്ളതോർത്ത് തലയ്ക്ക് ചുറ്റും, ചുവന്ന ഖാദിമുണ്ടുടുക്കും,വരവര കുറിയുള്ള കുപ്പായം ധരിക്കും, കിഴക്ക് നോക്കി നടക്കും.”ആയംപാറ കാട്ട്ലേക്ക് ” ആട നാലാൾക്കെട്ക്കണ്ടെ പണീണ്ട്. കൽപണിക്കാരന് ഉൾവിളിയുണ്ടായി. ഈ ലോകത്ത് കൽപണിക്കാരന്റെ കരവിരുതിലുണ്ടായ വീടെല്ലം ചിന്നാടനിൽ അഭിമാനം സൃഷ്ടിക്കും. മനുഷ്യസംസ്കൃതിയിൽ ഭാഗവാക്കായതിൽ തെല്ലഹങ്കരിക്കും.

ചിന്നാടൻ ചാക്ക്ന്ന് ഒരു മഴുവെട്ത്തിറ്റ് അയാൾക്ക് പിടിക്കാൻ കൊടുക്കും.ചിന്നാടന്റെ ചാക്കുംകെട്ടിന്റെ ഭാരം കുറയും. തൊണ്ടച്ഛൻ ബായി പോയ മഴു നോക്കി കൊഞ്ഞനം കുത്തും.വടക്ക്നോക്കി നടക്കും,കൊല്ലന്റെ ആലെലേക്ക്, അമ്പങ്ങാട്ടെ കൊല്ലൻ മഴു അടിച്ച് പരത്തും.
“എന്തിന് മൂപ്പറെ മൗ?”
“കല്ല് കെട്ടാൻ, ഒറ്റ കൊത്തിന് ബായി മടങ്ങാൻ പാടില്ല.”
കൊല്ലൻ ചിരിക്കും,അയാളെ കൈത്തണ്ടേരെ നേരും നെറിയും ആ നാട്ട്കാർക്കെല്ലം അറിയും.വാക്കത്തീം, ചെറുവാക്കത്തീം, മൂർച്ചക്കത്തീം അയാളണയ്ക്ക്ന്ന മാതിരി ആരും ചെയ്യിലല്ല.കൊത്ത്കാരൻ കമ്മാരൻ ഒരാഴ്ച തേച്ചും കല്ല് കൊത്തല്ണ്ട്. ചെത്ത്കാരൻ കുമാരൻ പത്ത്ദെവസം തേച്ചും കല്ല് ചെത്തല്ണ്ട്. കൊത്ത്മഴൂം,ബാജീം, ചെത്ത്മഴൂം അയാളണക്ക്ന്ന മാതിരി ആരും ചെയ്യിലല്ല. അമ്പങ്ങാട്ടെ കൊല്ലന്റെ ഖ്യാതി ആയംപാറ കാടും കടന്ന്,നെല്ലിത്തറ കുന്നിന്റെ മോളില് പാറിക്കളിക്ക്ന്ന് ണ്ട്. അമ്പങ്ങാട്ടെ കൊല്ലന്റെ പാരമ്പര്യം ചിന്നാടന്റെ അച്ഛൻ കല്ല്കൊത്ത് കുട്ട്യന്റെ കൊത്ത്മഴൂന്റെ പ്രൗഢി വരെ നീണ്ട് നിൽക്കും.

അയാള് നീട്ടി തുപ്പിക്കോണ്ട് പറയും.
ചിന്നാടൻ പിന്നെം നടക്കും. കാട്ടിയെട്ക്കം പൊഴേം ബംഗാട് ചുരോം കടക്കും.
“ഏടപ്പ പോന്നെ?”
വഴീന്ന് അമ്മിണി വിളിക്കും.ചിന്നാടൻ നിൽക്കും.കുടിലിന്റെ ബാത്ക്ക ആരൂല്ല.കട്ട മുറിച്ചു കെട്ടിയ ചുമരില്. പല്ലി മുട്ട വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് ചിന്നാടൻ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു.ചിന്നാടൻ തിണ്ണേലിര്ന്നു. ഉയർന്ന നെഞ്ചും,ചിരിക്ക്ന്ന മുഖോം അമ്മിണി കിണുങ്ങി.
“സത്രാണൊ?
ചിന്നാടന് വിശ്രമിക്കണം,ചിന്നാടന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം ദൂരെ ആയംപാറ കുന്നിന്റെ നട്ക്ക് കിട്ടന്റെ കൊട്ടാരം പണികളിലേക്ക് പാഞ്ഞു. നേരം ഇരുട്ടുന്ന്ണ്ട്.സന്ധ്യ പിന്നെം ചുവന്നു. അമ്മിണീന സന്ധ്യേരെ മടിത്തട്ടില് നിർത്തിയപ്പൊ കനായീരെ യക്ഷിശില്പം പോലെ വശ്യതയിലേക്ക് നീങ്ങി. മുടിക്കെട്ടഴിക്കാൻ ആഞ്ജാപിച്ചു. അമ്മിണി ഇംഗിതാനുസൃതം നിന്നു. ചിന്നാടൻ മുറുക്കി,ചിന്നാടൻ ലഹരി നുള്ളി, ഒരു തരിപ്പ്,വശ്യത നിറഞ്ഞ കോലങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞാടി.അനന്തനീലിമ പകർന്ന നിമിഷങ്ങൾ കടന്നു പോയി. ചമ്പാലൻ കോഴി കൂവി,ചിന്നാടൻ മുഖമുയർത്തി.മുഖം തുടച്ചു.ഒരു കട്ടൻ കിട്ടി.
“ഞാൻ പോന്ന്”
അമ്മിണി തടഞ്ഞു. ഉടയുന്ന കട്ട് ചുമരുകൾ നോക്കി അമ്മിണി പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചു.കറുക്കാൻ പോകുന്ന മാനത്തെ നോക്കി ചൊടിച്ചു. കെട്ടുറപ്പുള്ള വീട് വേണം, കൽപണിക്കാരന്റെ ധർമ്മം ചിന്നാടനെ മുറുകെ പിടിക്കും,കല്ലിറക്കാൻ കാശില്ല, കൂരമേയാൻ മുളിയില്ല.
വടക്ക് പോയ മൂപ്പര് കൊത്ത് മഴുവുമായി വന്നു.ചിന്നാടൻ അച്ഛന് മനസിൽ വിചാരിച്ചു.പാറമേലപ്പന്റെ മുകളില് പദം വന്ന പാറ നോക്കി വിധിച്ചു.നിന്റെ വീടിനുള്ള കല്ല് പാറമേലപ്പന്റെ കൃപയാൽ ഈ നാട്ടിലുണ്ട്.കൊത്ത് മഴുവെടുത്ത് ചിന്നാടൻ നീളത്തില് മുറിച്ചു. പാറമേലപ്പനെ ധ്യാനിച്ചു. അമ്മിണി കൊത്തിത്തെറിച്ച ചീളുകൾ മാറ്റി. ചിന്നാടന്റെ തോർത്തുടുത്ത മേലാകെ വിയർപ്പ് കണികകൾ പൊന്തി. അമ്മിണിയിലെപ്പോഴും ശൃങ്കാരചിരിയുണ്ടാവും. ചിന്നാടന്റെ മനസ് ഏകാഗ്രതയിൽ മുഴുകിയിരിക്കും. മേപ്പാറയിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു ചതുരക്കല്ല് കിട്ടി.അമ്പങ്ങാട്ടെ കൊല്ലനണച്ച കൊത്ത് മഴുവിന് വീര്യം കൂടുമ്പൊ ചിന്നാടന്റെ കൈകൾക്ക് ബലം കുറഞ്ഞാലും പണി നടക്കും. അമ്മിണീരെ കണ്ണുകൾ തിളങ്ങി.ഓളെ വീട്ടിന് പാദുകം വെക്കാൻ കല്ല് കിഴക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറ് നോക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. വടക്കൂന്ന് വന്ന് മൂപ്പര് പൂമണ്ണ് ചവുട്ടി കുഴച്ചു.ആഴ്ചകളും മാസങ്ങളും കഴിഞ്ഞു.ചിന്നാടന്റെ കരവിരുതില് തറയും ചുമരും പൊന്തി.വടക്കൂന്ന് വന്ന മൂപ്പര് ഊറി ചിരിച്ചു.അമ്മിണീരെ വയറ്റില് ചിന്നാടന്റെ കുഞ്ഞി.
ചിന്നാടൻ തെക്ക്ന്ന് മുളയും, വടക്കൂന്ന് തടിയും കൊണ്ടുവന്നു.നാട് തെണ്ടി ഒഴിഞ്ഞ് വളപ്പിലെ നെയ്മുളി അരിഞ്ഞ് കെട്ടി. ചിന്നാടന് വിറയൽ ദൂരെ ആയംപാറ കാട്ട്ന്ന് ചൂളം വിളി കേട്ടു. ചിന്നാടൻ നടക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി,
“ഞാനും ബെര്ന്ന്”
അമ്മിണി തടഞ്ഞു.

“മനസ് കൊട്ക്കാനറിയാ”
ചിന്നാടന് വിശ്വാസൂണ്ട്,ഓള് പഠിക്കും, അമ്മിണീരെ സൽക്കാരത്തില് ചിന്നാടന് സംതൃപ്തീണ്ട്.
“അപ്പൊ ഈ വീട് ആരിക്ക് കൊട്ക്കാൻ?”
വീടിന്റെ തരം നോക്കി,നിറം നോക്കി വീട്ട്കാരെല്ലം വന്നു.
” നീ പോണെ കൂത്ത്ച്ചി”
അമ്മിണീരെ നെഞ്ഞില് പച്ചുടു ആഞ്ഞ് ചവുട്ടി.ചിന്നാടൻ ആയംപാറ കാട്ട്ലേക്ക് നടന്നു.വടക്ക്ന്ന് വന്ന മൂപ്പര് പിന്നേം അമ്പങ്ങാട്ടെ കൊല്ലന്റട്ത്തേക്ക് പോയി.ചിന്നാടൻ ചാക്ക്ന്ന് ഒരുണ്ട ചരടെട്ത്തിറ്റ് അവൾക്ക് പിടിക്കാൻ കൊട്ത്തു.
“ഇതെന്തിന്?”
ചിന്നാടന് ചോദ്യങ്ങളിഷ്ടോല്ല.
“നീ ബെര്ന്നെങ്കില് ബന്നാ മതി”
പച്ചുടൂന്റെ ചവുട്ടിന്റെ പാട് നെഞ്ചത്ത് ഉരുണ്ടു കൂടി. അമ്മിണീരെ കയ്യ്ന്ന് ആണി കുരുക്കിയ ചരടറ്റം വീട്ടിന്റെ പാദുകത്തില് കുരുങ്ങി അവളറിയാതെ അവർക്കൊപ്പം നടന്നു. കരിച്ചേരി വളവും കൂട്ടപ്പനക്കുന്നും കഴിഞ്ഞു. ചിന്നാടൻ തളർന്നില്ല.അമ്മിണീരെ കൈയ്യില്ള്ള ചരട് ദീർഘദൂരം സഞ്ചരിച്ചു.വടക്ക് പോയ തൊണ്ടച്ഛൻ പിന്നേം വന്നു. അമ്മിണീരെ വയറ് വീർത്ത് വന്നു. ചിന്നാടന് ഉറക്കം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. കൈ മുറുകെ പിടിക്കാനൊ അറുത്തുമാറ്റാനൊ കയ്യ. ഒരൊഴുക്കിലെന്നവണ്ണം നീങ്ങി. അമ്മിണി കിതച്ചു.വൈദ്യരില്ലാത്ത കുന്നിന്റെ അറ്റത്ത് അവള് കിടന്നു. ചിന്നാടൻ വീട് തേടിയലഞ്ഞു.നാല് മൈലപ്പർത്ത് വീട്ണ്ട്,ഒരു കരാറെഴ്തി ചിന്നാടന് കൊട്ത്തു.ആയംപാറ കിട്ടന്റെ കൊട്ടാരം പണിക്കാരന വിട്ട് കൊടുക്കാൻ വീട്ട്കാരൻ തയ്യാറല്ല.

കുന്നിന്റെ മോളില് സകലപ്രൗഢിയോടുംകൂടി ഒരു കൊട്ടാരം കാണുന്നു. ചിന്നാടന്റെ ഉള്ള് വിറച്ചു,നിരാശ പരന്നു.കാല് പിറകോട്ട് വലിച്ചു.അമ്മിണിയെ നോക്കി. അമ്മിണീരെ കയ്യ്ന്ന് ചരടുണ്ടേരെ ചരട് പൊട്ടി. തൊണ്ടച്ഛന്റെ കൈയ്യിലെ മഴൂന്റെ ബായി പോയി.
