പാതിമയക്കത്തിൽ ആയിരുന്ന ഭവാനിയമ്മ എന്തോ ശബ്ദം കേട്ട് ക്ലോക്കിലേക്ക് നോക്കി.സമയം രാത്രി 12 മണി. അവൻ ഇതുവരെ എത്തിയില്ലേ?എന്റെ പുന്നാര മകൻ സേതു.ആരെങ്കിലും വാതിൽ തുറന്നു കൊടുത്തു കാണുമോ?തന്റെ ബെഡ്റൂമിന്റെ വാതിൽ തുറന്നു അവർ പുറത്തേക്ക് ഇറങ്ങി.അടുത്ത മുറിയുടെ വാതിൽ അടച്ചിരുന്നു.ഇളയ മകനും ഭാര്യയും ഉറക്കമായിരിക്കും എന്നുകരുതി പതുക്കെ വരാന്തയിലേക്കുള്ള വാതിൽ തുറന്ന് പുറത്തി റങ്ങി.അവിടെ എന്തോ അനക്കം കേട്ട് ലൈറ്റ് ഇട്ട് നോക്കി.അവിടെ തന്റെ സീമന്തപുത്രൻ സേതു ഇരിക്കുന്നു,ആരെങ്കിലും വാതിൽ തുറന്ന് തരുന്നതും കാത്തു. നന്നായി മദ്യപിച്ചിരുന്ന അവന് നടക്കാൻ പോലും വയ്യായിരുന്നു.വേച്ചു വേച്ചു അകത്തു കയറിയ അവനോട് ഭക്ഷണം വേണ്ടേ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചിട്ടും അതിനു മറുപടി ഒന്നും പറയാതെ അവൻ തന്റെ കട്ടിലിൽ ചെന്നു വീണു.കാലിൽ കിടക്കുന്ന ഷൂസ് പോലും മാറ്റാതെ.വാതിൽ അടച്ചു തന്റെ മുറിയിൽ ചെന്നു കിടന്ന ഭവാനിയമ്മ ഓരോ ഓർമകളിൽ മുഴുകി.സേതുവിന്റെ ഭാര്യ സീത ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ അവന്റെ കാര്യം ഒന്നും ഞാൻ ചിന്തിക്കേണ്ടായിരുന്നു.ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടാവുമ്പോൾ അവളെ ഞാൻ ഒരുപാട് കുറ്റപ്പെടുത്തി.എന്തൊക്കെ പ്രതീക്ഷകളോടെ വളർത്തികൊണ്ടു വന്ന മകൻ ആയിരുന്നു.പഠിത്തത്തിലും സ്വഭാവത്തിലും നല്ല നിലവാരം പുലർത്തിയ കുട്ടി ആയിരുന്നു സേതു.വീട്ടുകാർക്കും നാട്ടുകാർക്കും ഏറെ പ്രിയങ്കരൻ.
എവിടെയാണ് നമുക്ക് പിഴച്ചത്?നമ്മൾ അന്യനാട്ടിൽ ഇരിക്കുമ്പോൾ അവനെ നാട്ടിലേക്ക് പറിച്ചു നട്ടതോ.?അതോ അവന്റെ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടുകളോ??
അവൻ മദ്യപാനം തുടങ്ങിയതൊന്നും ആരും നമ്മെ അറിയിച്ചില്ല.പഠിത്തത്തിൽ അവൻ ഉഴപ്പിയില്ല. നല്ല വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടി.എന്നാലും എന്നും അവൻ ദുഃഖിതനായി കാണപ്പെട്ടു.പ്രായത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രസരിപ്പും അവന് ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.അവന്റെ സമ്മതമില്ലാതെ നിർബന്ധപൂർവം ഒരു സൈക്കിയാട്രിസ്റ്
നെ കാണിച്ചു മരുന്നു കഴിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി.അവന് മനസിന് ആഘാതമേൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യം നടന്നിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് ഡോക്ടർ പറഞ്ഞു.പക്ഷെ അതൊന്നും അവൻ ആരോടും തുറന്ന് പറഞ്ഞില്ല.
തുടർന്ന് വിദേശത്തു അവന് ഒരു ജോലി തരപ്പെടുത്തി നിർബന്ധപൂർവം
നാട്ടിൽ നിന്നും പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു.അവിടെയും സേതു മദ്യപാനം തുടർന്നു

നാളുകൾ ആ വീട്ടിൽ സന്തോഷം തിരതല്ലി. രണ്ടു മാസത്തിനു ശേഷം സേതു പഴയ സ്വഭാവത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു വരുന്നതായി ഭവാനിയമ്മക്ക് തോന്നി. സേതുവിന്റെ മദ്യപാനത്തെ കുറിച്ച് ഒന്നുമറിയാത്ത ആ പെണ്കുട്ടി പകച്ചുപോയി.എന്തൊക്കെ സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടാണ് വിവാഹ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് കാലെടുത്തു വച്ചത്.നല്ല വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, സൗന്ദര്യം, ജോലി എല്ലാം ഉള്ള സേതുവിന് ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു മുഖം ഉണ്ടെന്നറിഞ്ഞ ആ കുട്ടി ആകെ തകർന്നു.അവന്റെ വീട്ടുകാരോട് പ്രതികരിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി.പെണ്ണിനെ അന്വേഷിച്ചു വന്ന സമയത്തു സേതുവിന്റെ വീട്ടുകാർ അവനെ കുറിച്ച് ഒന്നും തുറന്ന് പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല.കുറച്ചു നാളുകൾക്ശേഷം വിദേശത്തു തിരിച്ചു പോയ സേതുവിന് അയാളുടെ നിലവിട്ട മദ്യപാനം മൂലം അവിടെ തുടരാൻ ആയില്ല.അതിനിടയിൽ സേതുവിന് ഒരു കുഞ്ഞു പിറന്നു.പിന്നീട് ഒരു സ്ത്രീ എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഭവാനിയമ്മ തന്നെ ഒരു തീരുമാനം എടുത്തു. സീതയെ അവളുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യതിനു വിടുക.തന്റെ സ്വന്തം മോൾക്ക്‌ ആണ് ഈ ഗതി വന്നിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ അവളുടെ ജീവിതം തച്ചുടക്കാൻ ഒരു മുഴുക്കുടിയന് വിട്ടു കൊടുക്കുമായിരുന്നോ?അങ്ങനെ ഭവാനിയമ്മ ഒരു തീരുമാനത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേർന്നു.സീതയെ അവളുടെ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു.കുഞ്ഞിനെയും കൊണ്ട് ഒരു ദൃഢനിശ്ചയതോടെ സീത അവളുടെ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് പോയി.ബന്ധം ഒഴിഞ്ഞില്ലെങ്കിലും
സീതയെ അവർ ഇങ്ങോട്ട് തിരിച്ചു വിളിച്ചതെ ഇല്ല. എന്നാലും അവൾ ജോലി ചെയ്ത് കുഞ്ഞിനെ നോക്കി അഭിമാനത്തോടെ ഇരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന കാര്യം ഭവാനിയമ്മയെ സന്തോഷിപ്പിച്ചു.
